Exploring Life & Business with Laura Templin of LT Swimwear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Templin.

Laura Templin

Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve spent my entire life in a swimsuit – from swimming competitively in college to training for Olympic trials to coaching my local Masters program. After my youngest turned five, I could not believe how hard it was to find a stylish, well-made swimsuit. I was a swim design professional who couldn’t find a great suit for herself. With my background in swimming, a bachelor’s degree in design, and my connections within the industry, I was able to make a few phone calls to get connected with the right people to help make the idea of a perfect suit come to life. As I continued to talk to friends about ‘my perfect suit’, it became apparent to me that this was a problem that needed my solution. I knew swimwear needed to fit and function in a way that improved confidence, stayed in place, and allowed you to bring the best, most present version of yourself in the water. The joy that comes from being fully present in a situation without all the worrying and self-judgment that comes from our internal voice is what we all deserve. Allowing women to be fully present in the water with their family is one of the greatest joys in this world, and I believe everyone should be able to feel that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have certainly had my fair share of struggles, but looking at them as problems to solve has been the key to continuing my journey into entrepreneurship. There are so many unknowns when you start a small business. I am skilled in design and have spent the majority of my working life in the design and merchandising space. So I felt very comfortable developing and choosing a product to go into my company and how to think about the finances associated with that, but everything else has taken some serious ‘googling’ and asking friends and family. Lots of studying new topics that I have never seen before and researching new terms that I didn’t understand. The hard work, resiliency, and commitment that I learned from years and years of competitive swimming are coming full circle to support building my business now and are exactly the skills I need to keep pushing forward.

We’ve been impressed with LT Swimwear, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
LT Swimwear is a premium swimwear brand made for the everyday woman, athlete, sunbather, and mom! No matter how you swim, our suits provide quality comfort and flexibility all while making you look and feel like your best self! With the right amount of coverage and strong, athletic vibes, you’ll be ready to strut your stuff; no cover-ups needed!

Our swimsuits are made from high-quality recycled material, made by hand in Los Angeles, CA, USA. I have loved developing incredible swimwear and finding fabulous products that complement our suits that round out your beach bag with products that are not only eco-friendly & family-friendly but most importantly products that will make your life better.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’ve already seen the void of active swimwear being filled by a number of brands, including mine, and I’m thrilled to be a part of filling this need for women. For my key market, swimwear needs to continue to evolve to work harder for women. Swimsuits need to be an integral part of women’s wardrobes as we are working out in the water, playing with kids, building sand castles, running errands, then going to dinner. Swimsuits should be versatile and stylish but also supportive and have the right amount of coverage.
