Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Scott.
Hi Leah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I actually always dreamed of being a doctor, a surgeon to be exact. But as I grew into who I am today, I realized the beauty industry was my calling. As a child, I was fascinated with styling hair, hair products, etc. I even begin doing friends and families hair at 12 years old. I went to cosmetology school at 16 and haven’t looked back since. Although I did go to college for Business and Human Resources and worked off end jobs, I hadn’t given up on my love for the industry. After working behind the chair as a stylist over ten years, I wanted more from the industry and something I could call my own and create generational wealth. I got laid off at the top of the pandemic, I was working as a salon manager for a high-end salon in Los Angeles, California at that moment a fire started burning to build my own empire! Diamond in the Rough Beauty Ltd. was created in 2020. We are on the way to being in business two years. We expect to grow worldwide and even reach retail markets. My inspiration was wanting my haircare brand to be a truly organic/vegan option for my customers. In the world of extensions, wigs, and weaves I believe that our natural should also be something to be proud of as well. Myself being relaxer free for over a decade I knew the pride in a beautiful head of natural hair and a healthy scalp. Hence the name of my company Diamond in the Rough Beauty Ltd. Beautiful and healthy hair is just a Diamond in the Rough and with proper care, you can GROW GOOD HAIR!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road definitely has not been smooth. I believe that first-time entrepreneurs see “the process” on social media and think that entrepreneurship is an easy road and it is not. Some of the struggles I’ve faced are financial. Everything I do within my company was out of my own pocket until the company was sufficient enough to “pay for itself”. There are also days or weeks you’ll get no sales even if you’ve promoted like you should. And the list goes on. All of those situations are worth it to me though because I created a business that I can call my own. And that’s something to feel proud of.
We’ve been impressed with Diamond in the Rough Beauty Ltd., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Diamond in the Rough Beauty is an organic hair care company that is suitable for women, men, and children. Our Rose infused products include an oil, moisture spray, and conditioning cream. Our best seller is our Radiant Rose Oil. This oils is known for elevating symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, and cradle cap. This oil also heals and stimulates the scalp to help grow hair, even in balding areas. This includes our men’s collection as well.
What sets DR Beauty apart is the organic Ingredients and healing properties my products provide.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise are the countless reviews of how my products blessed my customers. Especially the mothers with babies with cradle cap. One of the mothers said her babies hair begin to grow in after 12 days of using my oil!
Diamond in the Rough Beauty Ltd is 100% black-owned brand. The products are 100% handcrafted by myself. Lastly, 100% organic!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like about Atlanta is that it’s so much opportunity to win! I feel like Atlanta was made for people like me to thrive. I feel like Atlanta is a place where you will be supported by your community. Lastly, I feel there’s something for everyone’s interests.
What I like least is the traffic, haha. That would be about it.
