Exploring Life & Business with Marlena Strong of Strong Counseling & Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to  Marlena Strong, LPC, CAMS-II.

Marlena Strong

Marlena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From as early as I could remember I have always wanted to know the “why” of things. I wanted to understand myself and those around me. I found out in high school that a family member had a mental illness, but no one ever talked about it. I wanted to be better, and not shy away from having the difficult conversations, so I went to college and majored in Psychology and later got my Master’s degree in Counseling. I figured with knowledge I could help my own family as well as others. I have worked in the mental health field since 2006, serving in many capacities and I continue to learn and evolve with my field of practice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A smooth road without adversities would not be as interesting of a story. My journey in the field came with many challenges, some self-inflicted and others just due to lack of knowledge and understanding of who I wanted to be in this field. I struggled being in a helping profession where compassion does not pay bills, but when you are aligned with purpose you never have to worry. I felt there was a ceiling placed on what I was able to do in the field, but I was wrong. It is so important to be around others that are further along than you are in your journey. I had great mentors and wonderful supervision supervisors who I felt were very successful and paved new avenues for themselves in the field. They were the testament and reminder that you can create your own lane and make your journey how you see fit. I was told early on by my mentor that I would be great in private practice, and I just needed to see that for myself as well. I learned to be just as committed to my own goals as I was to others. I started my private practice during the pandemic and I couldn’t be more grateful.

As you know, we’re big fans of Strong Counseling & Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I currently own and operate a 100% Telehealth counseling and consulting practice. I serve individuals aged 14 + for concerns ranging from life transitions, grief, anger, depression, anxiety, stress management, and family/relational dynamics. Progress is indicative of your investment in yourself. As your therapist, I am on the journey of collaborating with you, but you must take the first step. I am most proud that I wake up loving what I do and contributing to the health and well-being of my community. I enjoy seeing the progress my clients make and how their lives change for the better.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would be a Christmas in the 90s when we lived with my Dad, it was the first time in my life I was able to witness My Dad, Mom, siblings and I under one roof. It will always be a special memory for me. I value family and the impact it has on person. My Dad always made these cinnamon rolls with an orange glaze with our breakfast and til this day I can smell the aroma of that loving day. It was simple and yet so meaningful.
