Today we’d like to introduce you to Micheal Wilson II.
Hi Micheal, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I never planned on starting a landscaping and tree service. After being injured at a warehouse job in 2013, I went through years of recovery and eventually received a settlement. Toward the end of that process, I decided to invest about the last 20–25% of that settlement into building something of my own.
One of the main reasons I did it was because I honestly didn’t believe I’d be able to get hired again. With my health conditions and the fact that I had just come out of a lawsuit, I felt like most companies or managers would see me as a liability. I was discouraged and didn’t want to depend on anyone else for my future, so I decided ; to hell with it, I’ll be my own boss.
With encouragement from my wife, I bought a truck, trailer, and equipment to start small. Lawn care made sense because I had been doing it since I was a kid, cutting grass in my neighborhood with my brothers. Over time, that small investment grew into Lawn Slayers LLC, which now handles everything from tree removals to grading, retaining walls, and land development. What started from necessity turned into a business that supports my family and strengthens communities across Georgia and South Carolina.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
LOL, has this been a smooth road? That’s a funny statement. Running a business is like a heart monitor ; up and down, up and down. The hardest part for me was realizing what I actually needed after I had already invested and had no more money. That was tough, because by the time I figured it out, it was too late. I had to work with what I already had, and make it stretch. That was the real challenge.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What sets Lawn Slayers LLC apart is our creativity. We’re still considered a small company, and a lot of our equipment is beginner-level compared to the big players. But that’s exactly what makes our story unique ; we’ve learned how to perform at a commercial level with limited resources. That takes creativity, determination, and the willingness to get personal with people.
What makes us different is that the owner ; me ; is still out here every day, putting in the sweat, blood, and tears, leading by example, and setting the tone for the company. I make it a point to build rapport with clients and also share knowledge with every employee who wants to learn.
We stepped into an industry where statistics said people like us would never make it, maybe wouldn’t even be alive today. Yet here we are, not only surviving but growing. That in itself is special because it proves you can achieve anything if you’re willing to invest the time, study it, research, meet people, and stay inspired.
For us, this business isn’t just about cutting grass or removing trees ; it’s about impacting the community as a whole. From our clients to our team, we want to add real value and leave behind something positive that goes beyond the work we do.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as being able to live the lifestyle you want and having control of your time. It’s not just about freedom, though ; it’s about loving what you do and becoming someone others can look up to. To me, if even one person wants to be like you or is inspired by what you do, that’s a form of success.
Success doesn’t always mean being rich or owning a business. It’s really about being the best at what you do and finding fulfillment in it. That’s how I see success.
