Exploring Life & Business with Myra Killings of Joseph Property Advisors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myra Killings.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My career in real estate began after working as an interior designer for several clients in the music and entertainment industry in the early 2000s. Although I initially helped them find properties in my role as a designer—not as a realtor—I soon realized the value of being able to guide them through the full real estate process. This led me to pursue my real estate license so I could represent them in purchasing the homes I sourced.

I later earned an Executive MBA to better educate clients on viewing real estate as a strategic business decision that should generate a return. Since then, my client base has grown significantly. I offer first-time homebuyer seminars to promote homeownership, and a large portion of my clients are now investors. I teach them how to identify income-producing opportunities through both fix-and-flip and buy-and-hold strategies, including the BRRR method—Buy, Rehab, Refinance, and Repeat. Many of these investors eventually move into new-construction development. Whether the project is a renovation or a new build, I continue to apply my interior design expertise to create standout features that elevate the property’s appeal in the marketplace.

In 2024, I launched Joseph Property Advisors, a full-service real estate brokerage representing buyers, sellers, landlords, and tenants in both residential and commercial transactions. We have agents available to assist with everything from starter homes to luxury properties, ensuring clients at every level receive the representation they need.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Real estate can be volatile and often moves in tandem with the broader economy and job market—they all ride the same wave. When the economy is strong, the real estate market typically flourishes; when the economy slows, sales can decline. To sustain your business through these shifts, it’s essential to know how to pivot regardless of external conditions. In strong markets, inventory tends to be low, while in weaker markets, inventory increases. Navigating these cycles becomes much easier when you are informed, adaptable, and prepared. The real estate bust in 2008 was one of my greatest teachers. I was new as agent with no back-up plan. I did everything I could as a licensed agent to make ends meet. I worked with lenders on pricing pre-foreclosures, listed short-sales and leased rentals. During the downward market, I received my business degree and approached real estate from a business perspective. It was a game changer for me.

Something many people don’t know about me is that I had to overcome deep insecurities and completely reshape my mindset before I ever began to experience success. I became a mother at a young age and spent years in survival mode. But as I started viewing my life through a different lens, I realized that teen pregnancy had actually built resilience within me. My son is the greatest gift God could have given me, and I’ve grown into who I am because of those early challenges. I’m grateful for the lessons that shaped me and led me to the goodness life offers today.

I also share an interior design firm with my sister Debra Killings. Carol Emily Atlanta is a full-service concept-to-construction design firm.
