Today we’d like to introduce you to Quincy Jones.
Hi Quincy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got inspired to pursue music from a business standpoint pretty early. I started off as a promoter booking small shows at parks, basements, backyards, etc. pretty much any venue that would let us host there. Once things got a little more consistent, I applied for my LLC and started building up my brand.
I believe in doing everything that you’re into and not being put into a specific box. Which is why I chose to make the company an entrainment production company rather than a record label.
As a person on the consumer end of things, I’m always looking for the next artist (graphic, musical, or other) whose work I believe should be put in front of as many people as possible. I love having the ability of being able to connect with different creatives and help them hone their skills and push their art to new heights.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road definitely hasn’t always been easy. One issue I run into alot is finding venues for some of the events due to the negative stigma behind rap music. A lot of places view rap music as dangerous or as a liability which makes it harder to find resources.
Luckily my team and I are persistent and resourceful when it comes to finding ways to overcome this form of suppression.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I run Unlocked Entertainment LLC, which is an entertainment production company operating out of the Midwest. We primarily host hip hop concerts, but in order to not be boxed into one genre, we dabble in fashion events, art exhibits, and more.
We also manage artist and help them develop their craft to be the best version they can be.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best advice I could give is to simply put yourself out there more and more genuinely. Just being a genuine person can open alot of doors.
If someone invites you out to a show, then take them up on the offer, surround yourself with like-minded people who are driven to accomplish their goals and push you to accomplish yours.
Networking is a major part of the business and can sometimes make or break your goals. As humans, we can’t do anything entirely on our own, so it’s always good to have a good network of people you can rely on.
