Hi Samira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an IT Project Manager for a Fortune 500 company. I have been in the IT field for more than ten years and currently still working my way up the ladder. I have always wanted to start a business and I was very particular about which one I ventured into. It had to be something I was passionate about… I always loved playing with fragrances from childhood and will always get compliments, and when people asked “What do you have on – I will proceed to tell them how many perfumes I have layered on to smell good, etc. One day I was getting my brows micro-bladded and my tech won’t stop complimenting how good I smelled and we proceeded to have a whole conversation about perfumes and how to layer them. She encouraged me to start a youtube channel or post more on IG teaching people how to layer perfumes or tips on how to get your fragrance to last all day. That was when it hit me cus most people had no idea about what perfume oils are and the power it held. After a lot of back and forth about a name, I came up with “Iyrah” which are the last four letters of my name. I called on a few friends who were running their businesses for advice and necessary steps to take and boom, I was ready to go! Through word of mouth, posting on IG I was able to launch and start making sales.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say so far so good and I pray it stays that way. It definitely has its challenges being a small business and still trying to get my name on the map. A lot of people don’t know what perfume oils are. One thing I do know is that great things come with some challenges and I’m prepared to take them on as they come … It definitely has been and is still a learning process – the most important being patience. There are days I have not gotten a single sale and yet I have to constantly remind myself to be patient and be grateful.
