Exploring Life & Business with Sandy Huff of Virginia Highland Books

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Huff

Hi Sandy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A “For Lease” sign started my journey to become an Independent Bookstore Owner. I was a stay home Mom of 3 with no intention of going back to work but that sign for a unique space in the middle of a beloved neighborhood called so loudly to be a bookstore that I could not ignore it. Six months later Virginia Highland Books opened.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid was the biggest struggle causing challenges with staffing when people were exposed or tested positive and shipping delays.

We’ve been impressed with Virginia Highland Books, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Virginia Highland Books is located at the center of Virginia and Highland surrounded by fun shops and restaurants. It’s eclectic charm with mismatched rugs and old reading lamps begs for browsing on a rainy Saturday. The unique space is quirky and eclectic with exposed brick walls and old wood floors and a hand stenciled staircase. The walls are home to one of a kind art pieces by local artists. And our staff of readers love to share their favorite reads or hear about yours.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
One thing I learned almost immediately when researching about owning a bookstore was that it is an incredibly collaborative industry! Can’t tell you how many stores took time to share vendor names or give advice. Square Books in Oxford, MS; Valley Bookstore in Jackson Hole, WY; E. Shavers in Savannah; and The Bookstore at Glen Ellyn, IL all gave me tips, contacts, etc. And after opening, I found fellow Atlanta booksellers who you might think would be competitors instead have become friends.

The residents of Virginia-Highlands are why we are able to stay open! From the moment it was announced that a bookstore would be opening, neighbors would stop in and offer to volunteer or ask how they could support us. Because they choose to shop local we are able to keep offering books to new readers.

Our staff, who love books as much as I do, shares that love and enthusiasm each and every day with readers.
