Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been someone who strives for greatness both personally and professionally. While that resulted in lofty ambitions and a lengthy to do list that never ended, that often led me feeling unfulfilled professionally. I originally began my career in education and, while I loved teaching, I knew that a lifetime teaching career would not be for me. In time, I found my niche as a therapist and noticed a major gap in the industry – rarely were there practices where both clinicians and clients felt seen and valued. I connected with my best friend with the hopes of opening a private practice that poured into clients as much as it did clinicians, and Soul Haven Counseling was born! This business was created with a care-first model where clients receive highly personalized mental healthcare, and clinicians have the freedom to practice in ways that align most with who they are clinically and the niche that brings them the most fulfillment.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening and co-owning a business will always have speed bumps and obstacles! Very early on we faced discrimination due to our age and gender, which is something that still impacts us regularly, We also taught ourselves basics of creating an ethical business when it comes to accessibility, accounting and fee structures, ethics, the legalities of business ownership, SEO and web design, networking, and work/life balance. These things weren’t taught to us in our counseling education, though they should be, so we navigated those learning curves together! Our first year open was all about embracing the discomfort of learning something new almost daily, and I’m immensely grateful to have such a great business partner to take on those growth opportunities with.
As you know, we’re big fans of Soul Haven Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
What I love most about Soul Haven Counseling is that every client’s experience is truly unique. No two of my clients receive the same treatment, which benefits everyone! That way, clients are able to have a treatment that fits them and their lifestyle, and I am constantly challenged and evolving as a clinician to provide the best possible care that I can. We absolutely adore our clients and proudly feel fulfilled in our work, something that is not as common in the field anymore! While we offer individual therapy services for children, teens, and adults, we also have our podcast, Couch Convos! This is our more “human forward” free podcast where we talk about the intersection of humanness and the clinical world. We deep dive into common topics we see in therapy, how we move through these things as people and how we guide our clients.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When we were starting out, I remember someone telling me that business ownership was a 24/7 job. Hearing that and living that 24/7 job were two very different experiences, so I wish someone told me early on to intentionally plan breaks, holidays, and time away from work! That balance is something I still strive for, and I wish I was more proactive in that. Advice I would give others opening a practice would be to keep going! Practice ownership can be hard, but it is SO fulfilling! It feels so good to bounce from my clinical brain to a business brain and to see growth in both areas. I’m immensely lucky to be in this position and to have worked so tirelessly with Caroline to build this business!
