Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McCleary.
Hi Sean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My wife Mary and I have been involved in martial arts for quite some time. Believe it or not, that’s how we met and our story together started.
I was a boxer, and Mary was a grappler. We met in 2012 in the gym where we trained and immediately fell in love. I switched from boxing to become a grappler just so I could spend more time with her. About one and a half years later, we were married.
We’ve trained together ever since. Mary received her black belt in 2019 and I received mine in 2021. After we both had ours and felt confident in teaching, we decided to open our own school. We decided on St. Marys because it was close to our home and the community didn’t have a lot of jiujitsu there either. Even before we opened, the community was very welcoming and helped us settle into our gym. We’ve had lots of people come and train and we couldn’t be happier where we are. We’ve been open officially for one year June 5th, 2022. I’m looking forward to what the future brings!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oddly enough, the road opening the gym was almost too easy. I kept talking to Mary saying, “I wonder when the rug is going to be swept from under us?”
From getting our business licenses to our building, remodeling, and our equipment, it all went smooth. I still really can’t believe it went like that.
I thank God and the community of St Marys too. The town was extremely welcoming of our gym.

Devine Jiu-Jitsu Camden is a Jiu-Jitsu gym that specializes in ground fighting and submissions. Our gym trains both Gi and Nogi styles of the martial art.
What we are known for and what sets us apart from others is the fact that we are the only Husband and Wife BJJ Black Belts in our area. We also attend and compete in high-level competitions such as Fight to Win and ADCC trials. We know and produce a high level of training environment in our school.
What I am most proud of is that even though we have high-level training here, is that we have a warm and welcoming gym atmosphere. No egos, no trying to prove you’re the biggest and baddest, just training and fellowship. Working hard for the common goal of becoming better than we were before.
As far as services, we specialize in Jiu-Jitsu, both Gi and Nogi. We have a no contract, easy sign-up method as well. We also offer personalized private lessons in Jiu-Jitsu as well as personal training for fitness.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be that whatever you do, put your heart and soul into it. If you don’t love it, there is something wrong.
