Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakyra Wortham.
Hi Shakyra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Miller Motte Technical College in 2017, and received my licensure in the same month. I immediately went to work in my field. I trained at different types of spas for a little over 3 years and then I worked at a chiropractor’s office before taking a leap of faith to become a business owner. I was able to take a little from every place that I worked to cultivate my own style and uniqueness.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a very scary journey to embark on at first, but it has taught me so much. I went from a full-time steady income, to a day to day income. I was hit with reality quickly and had to bet on myself. It was not easy, everything in me wanted to run back to working for someone else because it was safe. I gained so much confidence in myself along the way and have let go of what my life should look like. Now learning to celebrate the small wins and plan for better every month. I had to get over my introverted ways (still working on it) when it comes to promoting my business and being on social media. If it was up to me I would never post, yes I know that’s bad; but I’m working on it. This journey has opened my eyes up to so many possibilities within myself and I am learning how to bet on me. Becoming a business owner has also allowed me the time to focus on myself and my son. Having more time to focus on the important things in life, being able to rest more and just slow down and enjoy life more.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a Licensed Massage Therapist. I have been practicing for 4 years now and I have been in business for myself for a little over a year now. I specialize in self-care and relaxation, I pride myself on creating a relaxing environment for others to let their hair down so to speak. I am all about experiences so I choose to make all of my sessions a relaxing experience no matter what type of massage is selected. I am known for my touch and intuitiveness. I believe that the way that I steward my gift sets me apart from others. I choose to allow my heart to speak through my hands and go to the areas that need the most love, while at the same time giving the necessary attention to the rest of the body. I am most proud of being the 1st business owner in my family and how my brand is directly linked to my evolution. I use the butterfly in my logo to symbolize the process that I have gone through to get to the space that I am in today. Finding my confidence in my lane and spreading my wings to show my true colors. I offer 1 hour and 90 minute sessions ranging from relaxation to deep tissue. I use hot towels and warm oil to create the relaxing experience. I allow my clients to choose add-ons such as hot stones, foot scrubs and aromatherapy to enhance their sessions if they desire.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are to open up my own studio. I want to have my own space to create the experiences that I have envisioned for my clients. I also want to have a space big enough to host events and small retreats to create spaces for women and men to feel seen and heard. To also provide practical tools to use to include more self-care in their lives and make themselves a priority. It all beings with you, and we can’t keep continuing to live on fumes and pour from empty cups.
