Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnte Mays.
Hi Shawnte, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Becoming an entrepreneur in my community has always been a personal goal of mine. My interest in non-emergency medical transportation began after personally experiencing the lack of reliable transportation. Having an uncle with a disability and watching my family struggle to find a reliable transportation company instantly sparked my passion for helping people, launching my research of non-emergency medical transportation companies. It shocked me to find the amount of disabled and elderly individuals in my community who struggled with this same issue.
After weeks of research, I discovered the industry had a high demand for transportation companies that provided this specific service for disabled and elderly individuals within Fulton County. I reached out to a few insurance companies to learn more about how to become a contracted transportation provider for their company. Once I gathered that information, I immediately began taking the necessary steps to become a licensed transportation service provider for my community. Three months later, I obtained my first contract.
As a business owner, I became dedicated to finding a way for my community to count on me to transport disabled and ambulatory patients to their medical appointments safely and on time. Now my community can depend on RC’s Logistics and Transportation for safe, secure, and timely non-emergency transportation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My entrepreneurial journey has not been without many peaks and valleys. In the beginning of my business journey, I utilized a brokerage company to gain clients. However, that partnership became more challenging than beneficial as the brokerage’s actions were not aligned with my company’s mission or values. Unfortunately, within the first year of operating, I made the tough decision to part ways with the brokerage and provide my own marketing. Although the partnership was not financially beneficial, I gained hands-on knowledge and experience that positively influenced my selection process for prospective collaborations and partnerships. In addition, leaving the brokerage forced me to develop new skills in marketing, finance, operations, and human resources. Although the change came with a huge learning curve, it made me stronger and well-rounded as a business owner.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
RC’s Logistics and Transportation is a non-emergency transportation company that specializes in disabled and senior transportation. Aside from transportation, our goal is to help maintain the independence of our clients while supporting the life they design. We provide safe and reliable transportation to our client’s desired destinations. Although our office is in Dunwoody, Georgia our services extend throughout Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Rockdale counties. Our vehicles are American Disabilities Act (ADA) approved with rear wheelchair entry. Our staff are experienced professionals with active CPR and ADA wheelchair securement certifications.
Our client care is what sets us apart from other transportation companies. At RC’s Logistics & Transportation, we consider our clients to be family and we treat them as such. Our goal is to extend our service beyond door-to-door. Our trained staff members assist with getting clients out of their homes, into the vehicle, and into facilities while also ensuring they are checked in for their appointments. Our client’s time is important to us, which is why we stay in the area during the duration of their appointment to ensure a quick and easy ride home.
Giving back to my community has always made me most proud of my company. As a result, every month we pick one client to receive our Community Needs Us Award, which is a free transport to the grocery store, dinner, movies, or a destination of their choice. This is our way of thanking our clients for trusting us with their transportation needs.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would say my business has been blessed. I have been blessed to have great mentors to provide unyielding strength, support, resources, and knowledge in entrepreneurship. I have been blessed to have life experiences that contribute to my ability to effectively engage with clients to make them feel comfortable during a time of uncertainty. I’ve also been blessed with a supportive and patient community that makes every ride rewarding.
