Exploring Life & Business with Shelese Jenkins of The Bloom & Batter Cake Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelese Jenkins.

Hi Shelese, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My baking journey began unexpectedly in 2018, when I had a random urge to make a unicorn cake with matching cupcakes for my daughter’s first birthday. I didn’t touch another cake until her second birthday, when I challenged myself with a three-tier Sesame Street cake. She didn’t have a party that year, so I shared it with neighbors—who couldn’t stop talking about it.

From that point on, I made her birthday cake every year, each one pushing me a little further creatively. Eventually, I made a cake for my sister’s 10th birthday celebration at the Sugar Factory, and the response completely surprised me. The compliments, encouragement, and genuine excitement from others planted a seed.

In May 2023, I took a cake decorating class—not to learn from scratch, but to confirm that this was something I truly had a talent for. Shortly after, I officially opened my business. Since then, I’ve been creating custom cakes and cupcakes that turn special moments into lasting memories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been building a community while staying consistent with marketing—all while working a full-time 9–5. As a small business, visibility is everything; people buy what they see. Learning how to consistently show up, create content, and market my work outside of my regular work hours has been challenging, but it’s also pushed me to become more disciplined and intentional with my time.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Bloom & Batter Cake Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in custom cakes and desserts for weddings and celebration events, with a strong focus on both design and flavor. While the visual aspect is important, I take pride in the quality and taste of my cakes, making sure they’re just as enjoyable to eat as they are to look at.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to create desserts that feel personal and thoughtfully made. From custom cakes and cupcakes to additional treats, every order is crafted with care and attention to detail, ensuring each dessert reflects the moment it’s meant to celebrate.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting a business in itself is a risk. Choosing to invest in yourself, your vision, and something that isn’t guaranteed requires a certain level of faith. For me, stepping into entrepreneurship meant taking calculated risks…putting time, energy, and resources into my business while still working a full-time job and managing everyday responsibilities.

I believe risk-taking is a part of life if you want to grow beyond where you are. You may not always feel fully ready, but progress often comes from moving forward anyway and trusting that consistency and commitment will meet you along the way.
