Exploring Life & Business with Sun Kim of On Mind Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sun Kim.

Hi Sun, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in South Korea. As young as the age of 5, I remember feeling depressed and worried often. I had a hard time adjusting to school, making friends, and focusing on schoolwork. I knew I was emotionally more sensitive than others and I didn’t know what was going on. I moved to the U.S. in my early 20s and started studying nursing and mental health. Medicine is fascinating and I love it. It all made sense why people get depressed and anxious. It was amazing to learn how people can be better with evidence-based practice. I learned that mental health is just like physical illness, not a lack of morals or a character flaw, but a condition that needs support, care, and treatment. Since I started working in health care, I found out that I love talking with people and helping them regain their inner peace and strength. I love helping my clients to find what is important to them and how to communicate with others effectively. I love to help people heal their traumas and move on with their lives, be more confident and overcome their obstacles. It is so rewarding to see my clients get through difficult times and conquer their fears, depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship difficulties. Mental health is not just a job for me. It is my mission to help people to live their lives to the fullest. I fell so many times in the past and I know how hard it is. That’s why I don’t judge anyone. I wish to tell people that they don’t have to stay in the darkness alone anymore.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
At the beginning of my career, it was not easy at all because I was being too empathetic. I often felt emotional burnout, compassion fatigue, and experienced passive traumas. I had to master my own thoughts and emotions to teach others how to control their thoughts and emotions. I trained myself very hard with emotion regulation, positive thinking, self-compassion, self-care, grounding, mindfulness, etc. Fighting mental health stigma is also hard project because many people feel ashamed and guilt for not being mentally strong and healthy. Mental health stigma blocks people from getting help and live healthier lives. I work very hard to fight with mental health stigma and fight with their feeling of shame and guilt.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with over fifteen years of experience in a healthcare setting. When client first come in, I evaluate the current psychiatric condition and find out what triggers symptoms. We will dig in deeper to resolve any unprocessed past trauma and unpleasant memories. Then I can guide my clients through how to manage stress and fear using talk therapy and medication if needed. I treat my clients with compassion and dignity so that they feel seen and heard. I speak both English and Korean fluently. I provide both counseling and medication management.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think my clients have been the best of luck in my life and business. I appreciate each client for trusting me and following my guidance. Without their trust and commitment, I couldn’t be here. My family has been the best luck inspiring and supporting me to be able to serve my community. My friends have been another best luck for supporting and allowing me to grow and thrive. Special thanks to my best friend Judie and Jihyun for continuous support and trust. I am grateful for cohosting ‘Mom’s Prayground’ in YouTube channel, CCM with Judie. Dr. David Kim and Dr. Kevin Buford have been incredible mentors and blessings to my career for their endless support and wisdom.
