Exploring Life & Business with Tashawna Chisholm of Wealthy Family Network

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tashawna Chisholm.

Tashawna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into real estate started with rejection. My husband and I walked into a bank years ago excited to buy our first home. We thought we were ready — only to hear the words no one wants to hear: “You don’t qualify.” We couldn’t even get approved for a $65,000 foreclosed manufactured home. It was heartbreaking. We had just gave birth to our daughter. That moment could’ve defeated us, but instead, it became our motivation.

We decided to take control. We fixed our credit, found ways to increase our income, and paid off debt. I immersed myself in understanding money, lending, and how to position ourselves financially. Two and a half years later, in September 2013, we bought our first home.

Two years later, we bought our second home in another state and turned our first into a rental. We were so excited to become landlords, but it wasn’t what we expected. Within a year, the tenants stopped paying rent, trashed the property, and left us with an expensive lesson. Still, we didn’t give up. We learned the BRRR method, developed systems for tenant screening, and treated investing like a business.

Within five years, we built a real estate portfolio valued at over $1.5 million — all while working full-time and raising a family. Today, our rentals generate consistent four-figure monthly profits, and we’ve mastered how to create wealth part-time.

Professionally, I’ve spent over two decades in real estate, mortgage lending, and business development. From helping families add $5,000-$40,000 a year back into their homes to creating 6 figure retirement income.

Today, as a licensed mortgage broker, real estate investor, and investing coach, I help families do what we did — but faster and smarter. I teach them how to get mortgage-ready, acquire properties, create passive income, and build generational wealth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we tried to buy our first house, we couldn’t even qualify for a foreclosed mobile home.
Our credit wasn’t there, our income wasn’t enough, and we were denied three times over a one-year period.

It took almost two years before we were finally in a position to buy, but we didn’t let the rejection stop us.

A few years later, we turned our first home into a rental and were quickly introduced to the hard lessons of investing. Our tenants stopped paying, left in the middle of the night, and trashed the property. We were devastated. We fixed the house, but the experience shook us so much that we sold it and swore off real estate for a while.

But one thing remained constant — our decision to build wealth. I dove deeper into real estate, studying different mortgage programs that could help my clients and me save or create more money. Working on the mortgage side showed me the long-term impact real estate can have.

That’s when I realized we could build wealth and create income at the same time. So we went all in. Year by year, we refined our process and built the system that would eventually change our lives.

When COVID hit, everything shifted. Real estate wasn’t just an idea anymore; it became the plan. We acquired our first official rental property and, over the next five years, faced even more challenges—from subcontractors overcharging or disappearing with our money to tenants damaging properties and ongoing financing hurdles.

But despite it all, we gained far more than we lost. Today, we rarely get tenant calls, have minimal maintenance issues, and the returns have made every obstacle worth it. Now, we have a multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio, a legacy we’ll pass down for our children to enjoy.

In life, obstacles and challenges are opportunities to learn and grow — as an individual, business owner, and professional. The real benefit comes from the knowledge you gain through solving problems. Each time you overcome one, the next project becomes easier. That mindset allowed us to roll with the punches, knowing every struggle was only temporary.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I help families turn their income into long-term wealth through real estate. As a mortgage broker and financial manager, I believe wealth isn’t just about owning property; it’s about creating a system that generates income today and builds a legacy for tomorrow.

My company helps professional mothers and families acquire real estate that pays them back—rental properties, investment portfolios, and first homes that become wealth-building tools. We make real estate simple, transparent, and achievable, no matter where you’re starting. I don’t just close loans; I design strategies that free up cash flow, eliminate debt, and create generational security.

While most mortgage professionals focus on approvals, I focus on positioning. We are positioning families for income, growth, and lasting ownership. We go beyond credit and rates to help clients understand the “why” behind every financial move, involving their children so wealth education starts at home. This isn’t just a transaction; it’s a transformation.

My message has remained consistent: Build income today and wealth tomorrow. Every family that pays off debt, buys property, or teaches their kids about ownership proves this mission works. Together, we’re redefining what financial freedom looks like.

Our programs and workshops don’t just teach property ownership; they help families build legacies. Wealthy Family Network is the central hub for families who want to build wealth, create income, and retire early. We teach how to reduce debt, increase income, and align family goals through real estate and strategic financing. Members learn how to leverage investment properties, collaborate with other high-achieving families, and involve their children through Family Wealth Planning sessions.

It’s not a course. It’s a community where real-life strategies meet real-life results. We’re teaching families how to own assets, not just incomes. Because wealth isn’t built overnight. It’s built in alignment, with intention, and with the right team beside you.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
There is power in networking. Many people miss the true purpose of it. Networking is more than just meeting people. It’s an opportunity to build meaningful connections. You never know who might need your help, or how you can create value in someone else’s life by connecting them with people you’ve met.

Networking is like word of mouth. When people genuinely connect with you and know what you do, they’re far more likely to refer others your way. That’s exactly how I’ve built my business over the years.

Mentorship is the real cheat code! With the right mentor, you can achieve incredible things in a fraction of the time. For example, I serve as a mentor to my clients. They’re able to fast-track their results and shorten their learning curve because they have a trusted advisor they can reach out to. When I was seeking mentors myself, I chose people who were already successful in my industry. I learned from them, implemented what they taught, received feedback, and adjusted along the way.

When I first became a financial manager and loan officer over 10 years ago, I had a mentor that taught me the financial industry. I learned about how money works, how mortgages work, and how you can leverage equity. I had access to over 25 years of knowledge that was fed into me daily as I learned the industry and helped clients.

There are so many great resources out there, from organizations like the SBA to programs like our own Wealthy Family Network that offer mentorship and guidance. You want to choose someone that is where you want to be in your life, professionally or personally.

Networking and mentorship are true cheat codes in life, and the best part? They don’t require money to get started, just the willingness to connect and learn.

I would be remiss if I forgot to mention the biggest mentor in my life—God. I have learned so much about myself and how to navigate the world by reading the Bible.
