Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrica Walker.
Hi Terrica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Walker Run Outdoor Events and Excursions Limited Co. in 2020. My passion for hiking is what got me where I am today. In 2018, I got the concept of “Hike and Brunch” from partaking in a Bike and Brunch with Let’s Do This Houston/3rd Ward Tours in Houston, Texas. I pondered on the concept for years but was too intimidated to step out on faith and make an investment. Once COVID19 came upon us, making life as I knew seem so uncertain, I finally gave in. I felt as though tomorrow wasn’t promised, so do the things that I have wanted to do. Now I am still here in 2022, after completing one full year of business and ready for many more!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting Walker Run Outdoor Events and Excursions has not been a smooth road. I was not as prepared for entrepreneurship as I thought I was. Learning to navigate working 9-5, business, and personal life was one of my bigger struggles. Turning a hobby into a business was not as smooth of a transition as I thought it would be. After hiking for leisure and peace for so long, I felt muddled and as if I wasn’t giving myself time alone in nature. It felt as if I was always hosting. Hiking is not just physical for me but also mental and spiritual. Not being able to think through my thoughts the way I used to really took a mental toll on me. With guidance from my grandaddy, Randolph Gaither, I was able to better manage my time. I struggle a lot with marketing. Creating content, sending emails, social media, etc. are extremely time-consuming. I sought out a paid college intern but didn’t get much interest. I then took it upon myself to learn better marketing skills, which has been okay, but I understand that having a professional will be 100 times better. One of my goals this year is to hire a permanent Marketing Coordinator to the team.
We’ve been impressed with Walker Run Outdoor Events and Excursions, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Walker Run Outdoor Events and Excursions Limited Co. specializes in curated outdoor experience, perfect for those who have a passion for nature and can enjoy a great adventure. We offer inclusive excursions from hiking, biking, axe throwing, camping, tubing, skeet-shooting, and other activities. What sets Walker Run Outdoor apart from other outdoor events is the diversity, no event is ever the same, from the food to the location. All events are always planned spontaneously based upon activities I’ve experienced and would like to share or like to try, food I love or I’m craving, etc. Walker Run offers you exciting adventures and a posh “pretty” picnic with delicious food and drinks! Whether you join us as a group or book us privately for your special occasion, we are here! We have even hired an in-house Chef to cater most of our events. I want everyone to know that Walker Run Outdoor Events are for everyone. Whether you are looking for an adventure, good food, meet new people, team building, fun day, outing, or celebrating anything, a Walker Run Event is for you! We create a safe space for everyone to be themselves, meet others, try new things, or if it’s an activity that you already do to have a different experience than you had before. While the business reflects myself, I love to take feedback from attendees. A Walker Run Outdoor adventure is where you want to be! Every event is an adventure different from the last, so you will want to be at all of them!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Whether it is called a risk or stepping out on faith, we all do it in some form. Starting a business has been the biggest risk that I’ve invested in. Every event that I host is a risk. I plan excursions and hope others will be just as excited about partaking in the activity or enjoy the menu. For me, risk-taking comes with a lot of questions and prayer. I think through every possibility first and if the good outweighs the bad or I get a good feeling, I pray about it and let things fall into place. In this past year, risk taking has not always worked in my favor, I made a lot of mistakes that could’ve been avoided by simply being more educated or seeking wisdom. In all, risk taking is truly a chance you’re taking and the more you prepare the better your outcome.
