Hidden Gems: Meet Adrianne Buchanan of Bohemian BAP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrianne Buchanan.

Hi Adrianne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Adrianne Buchanan. I’m an entrepreneur, finance professional, accountability coach, and workshop facilitator. Most recently, I started a non-profit, Pretty on the Inside Foundation, to help girls of color comprehend, manage, and express their emotions.
My faith in God has gotten me to where I am today. I’ve been blessed to have a partner, family, and friends who always encourage me to go after my dreams.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a long journey to get to this point. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I’m passionate about women becoming the best version of themselves. However, it was important for me to do the work for myself before venturing out to help the next woman. That was the most difficult part of the journey. Being honest with myself. Shadow work has helped me to see areas that I could improve on.
Professionally, there’s so much that goes into setting up a business the right way. A major challenge in the beginning is just getting brand visibility. Creating authentic relationships and gaining customer trust can be tough when you’re building from scratch. It requires you to wear a few hats that you’re not used to. That’s why it’s important to reach out to your network. Asking for help never hurts.

We’ve been impressed with Bohemian BAP, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Thank you. Bohemian BAP is a wellness community centered on the emotional and mental healing of girls and women of color, specifically, those of the Christian faith. I might be biased but I think we have a unique approach to helping women heal. I’m all about balance,it was important as the founder of this brand, to ensure that we provide multiple opportunities for growth and healing.
In addition to several books, we have our Bag of Vibes Awakening Intention Deck. It is one of few mindfulness tools created with the emotional needs of African American women in mind. These decks are great for ice-breakers, workshops, and personal meditation. Several members of our tribe have shared how they pulled out the cards during dinner parties. Let’s just say the conversations were enlightening!
Bohemian BAP advocates for Black Mental Health: 10% of our proceeds are donated to The Loveland Foundation Therapy Fund, which provides financial assistance to Black women and girls nationally seeking therapy. We also share community resources with our network that can aid women on their journey to healing.
Our YouTube show, Melanin Vibes, is aimed at showcasing the many faces of black women. Last season we interviewed several entrepreneurs, actresses, musicians, and models. What makes Melanin Vibes unique is that we ask our guests to share something about their personal mental wellness practice with our audience.
At Bohemian BAP we strive to serve Social Justice movements through sustainability: 10% of our proceeds are donated to Until Freedom, an intersectional social justice organization rooted in the leadership of diverse people of color to address systemic and racial injustice. Prior to moving to Atlanta we volunteered our time with Alexandria House, an organization that provides transitional housing for women and women with children.

Our newest venture, Pretty on the Inside a Social-Emotional Intelligence Course, is our Extended Learning program designed to teach African American girls ages 5 – 14 how to effectively manage their emotions. It is our goal to launch the Pretty on the Inside pilot program in Fall 2022.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My best advice to anyone starting out is to celebrate the small wins. Dream big for sure but recognize that you will face challenges along the way. You have to be in it for the long haul. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. Surrounding yourself with other business-minded individuals. You have to understand that creating a sustainable business that adds value to the community requires the help of your village. Recently I hired a business coach. It was one of the most helpful things I’ve done. Just having a non-biased person to bounce ideas off of and hold you accountable to those ideas caused me to be much more productive. Hire a coach!

Lastly, never forget to embrace the journey!
