Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfonso Villalba Carrera.
Hi Alfonso, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
You could say my story started in 1996 when I was 8. My mom, older sister, and I left Mexico and moved to the USA where my dad had already been living in Georgia for about a year. My dad was already working in the roofing industry and started taking me with him every summer during school break. During those summers, I really got to see the hard work of being a roofer, which is not an easy job at all. Eventually, I was able to properly learn the job and pick up the skills as well.
Roofing became natural to me, and it seems like I’ve always been brought back to it in some way. For example, when I graduated high school and was pursuing my degree at GA Tech, I would go work with my dad and his roofing crew during any school breaks. When I did graduate college, I was hopeful to land an engineering position, but being undocumented made it difficult and there weren’t many opportunities for me. So, I was brought back to roofing, and I eventually made the decision to stay and work alongside my dad.
A couple of years later, I got a project manager position for the company my dad was subcontracting for and that helped give me insight into what I wanted for myself. I decided to leave that job in order to pursue my own goals. Once I left, it only felt natural for my next step in life to be starting my own roofing company, and with the support of my family, I decided to create The GA Leak Detective.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a completely smooth road. I think any challenges I’ve faced have been due to a lack of opportunity. When you’re competing against bigger and more established roofing companies, homeowners sometimes don’t want to take a chance on a smaller company.
We’ve been passed up by multiple homeowners, but it hasn’t deterred me. It’s a great feeling when homeowners decide to go with The GA Leak Detective for their roofing needs.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Georgia Leak Detective. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We specialize in roof repairs and roof leak detection, and I think what sets us apart from other companies is definitely the experience we have.
My dad and now business partner have been doing this for over 25 years and I grew up learning and doing it with him. When established roofing companies we worked for were selling their service, my dad’s crew and I were the ones doing the actual roofing work for them. I’ve also been involved with project management and sales so I know the ins and outs of the roofing industry.
This experience is what allows me to know what to look for when a homeowner tells me the kinds of roofing problems they’re having, and what allows me to know exactly how to solve it.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’d like for people to keep The GA Leak Detective in mind for any roofing needs they have, and it helps when previous clients recommend us to their friends and family.
