Hidden Gems: Meet Alice Serres of Community Market Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Serres.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Last December 2021, as an artist and a Queer person, when I was getting started with selling my work, I found it hard to access the market world. I had a hard time finding applications for artists to apply to, I usually found out about events after they occurred or market vendor fees were just too expensive for me as a new business. It didn’t feel accessible to me financially and I could get connected to the “right” people to know about events yet. At the same time, Through a dear friend, I was introduced to Danielle Glasky of Bat Bat Soda and Tic Tac coffee, who opened up her Midtown courtyard to me to sell my work over the holiday season. It gave me access to an area of midtown with a bustling crowd and allowed me to sell my work and pay my bills. It was truly a gift and was so thankful for the ability to try this out on my own with no cost to me other than my time in a safe space with kind people. Months later, talking to other friends and artists, it was clear that we all felt this way and recognized the privilege I had to have a connection with someone that opened up their space and I wanted to share this with others. We wanted to have access to spaces to sell our work consistently, not just a few times a year and be able to sustain ourselves with our creative businesses.

Today, this has spiraled into lots of connections with businesses who believe in the artist community and are interested in creating space for people like us to sell our work. We usually partner up with coffee spaces, up and coming businesses who see value in the crowds we bring in and want to be a part of this really sweet, kind and supporting group of magical humans.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been really lucky to meet great people like Danielle Glasky from Bat Bat Soda, Kayla Bellman from Finca to Filter and many others from Create ATL and as well as artists, the list goes on. The space we create together with the amazing vendors is truly magical and has organically attracted sweet humans. I know I’ve grown a lot and continue to learn each time we host another event. Most importantly I recognize that working with Queer like-minded individuals is crucial to all of our success and I want to continue to align each event with the intent to uplift the Queer community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Community Market Atlanta?

Our Vendors fees are always sliding scale/ NOTAFLOF. It’s important for this space to stay accessible to anyone starting their artist/ small business journey.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Stay chill there is always a solution and don’t take on too much. Ask for help!
