Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Hilton.
Hi Andre, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I initially went to Prairie View A&M University and HBCU in Texas and got my degree in Architecture thinking I wanted to be an architect. I moved to Atlanta right out of college, however, it was 2008 and the economy was awful. I ended up becoming a teacher instead until I figured out my career path. One day a colleague came to my home and was blown away at my decor and asked had I thought about being an interior designer. I mentioned it to a close friend who referred me to Michel Boyd who became my mentor and first internship. Upon seeing his website, I knew I had found the career for me. It was something I harbored my entire life. The way I’d rearrange my room as a kid, I was always obsessed with everything having its place and constantly changing my environments so it all made sense.
Fast forward after my internship, I felt confident that I had what it took to start my own design firm. Although I didn’t have much money, luckily my knack for making a dollar look like a million bucks took me far very quickly. I started networking to pull in clientele, which worked to its advantage. Gained a great clientele base and photographed my own work (with my iPhone) haha. I ended up meeting Egypt Sherrod who became a big client, now friend and big sister who ushered me into the world of HGTV where I gained a lot of knowledge working behind the scenes of shows as a design consultant. I continued to work hard to build a brand that I could be proud of, so there will definitely be plenty more things to come from Jordan Hilton Interiors.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth? Absolutely not. I jumped out on my own prematurely. I honestly wish I would’ve given my internship another year; it would’ve saved me a lot of headaches early on. At the beginning I focused so much on the creative side I didn’t really understand the business side in full capacity. Of course, I do now, but I had to learn how to really run a business. Some of the struggles along the way were building a team, overwhelming myself with projects, and not understanding the importance of saying no. I ended up burying myself in work which caused lots of stress and frustration.
We’ve been impressed with Jordan Hilton Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Jordan Hilton Interiors is a design firm that prides itself on its motto, “Luxurious Lifestyle Personified!” We specialize in Luxury residential and commercial design while looking to venture into hospitality design. I take pride in providing each individual client with a tailored design experience to fit their style, needs, and routines.
I’m definitely known for my textured, clean and balanced aesthetic. Texture for me is like food. I need it, we all need it. I believe touch is the strongest sense, so textures play a huge part in my design process. I love my rooms to be soothing, to feel good, and exciting all the same.
What sets me apart from other designers is my curated style, I have a love for all things design and love creating spaces with old and new. I like to tell a story, which makes for a good character in a home.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of standing the test of time and watching my brand grow. I’ve seen a lot of companies come and go but seeing things flourish year after year lets me know the hard work is not in vain and that I’m where I am supposed to be. I’m expecting an art line and designing product in 2023, so I’m extremely excited of what’s to come with that.
I want readers to know that at Jordan Hilton Interiors, we offer custom design on all levels, whether you are a maximalist, minimalist or in the middle. Custom furniture is part of our brand and something we also offer our with our design experience.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a fun little creative oddball haha. I was the neighborhood yard boy obsessed with immaculate landscaping. I was also very organized, a neat freak to say the least. I always took pride in cleaning up, doing my chores and keeping my family home in top shape. I guess I harbored design from that time without even knowing it. I also loved to draw portraits of my favorite people, draw and design homes and floorplans. Every year months before prom, I’d design all the girl’s dresses and they’d have them made. I probably could’ve been a fashion designer too haha. I played sports and was very competitive, being from Texas you have to be. It’s a sports state. I played in the band and loved music of all kinds, and eventually became drum major in my high school band. Overall, I had a pretty cool childhood I think.
