Hidden Gems: Meet Angela & Dennis Buttimer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela & Dennis Buttimer.

Hi Angela & Dennis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before we knew each other in our teens, we were both exposed to and began consistently practicing mind-body health techniques like meditation, journaling, running, etc. We were both highly interested in speaking to audiences as an opportunity to uplift humanity. We both went to the same graduate school for psychology (Georgia State University) but did not know each other yet. We then came full circle to deliver our TEDx talk in 2017 (together!! – GSU was rated #4 in the country on innovation) on Defusing Stress with Mindful Mojo at our alma mater. It was a meaningful speaking engagement for many reasons – we discuss the personal tragedies in our lives and then review tools and techniques others can use to overcome grief and loss, mental health issues, and the essential challenges that life brings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve had a lot of ups and downs. We were very fortunate to be exposed to mind-body practices like mindfulness and mediation as well as exercise in our teens because Angela struggled with depression and Dennis with anxiety. We lost several close family members back to back – Angela’s father died of cancer. Shortly thereafter, her sister died in a car accident, leaving behind her precious two-year-old son, who we keep on the weekends and participate actively in his life. A year later, Angela’s brother took his own life. In the midst of Angela’s losses, Dennis lost his mother to congenital heart failure. Each of these losses were heartbreaking, and it is only through the mind-body practices that Angela & Dennis practice and teach along with their deep faith and contemplative daily spiritual practice that they were able to survive and now thrive, all while keeping their entrepreneurial business afloat.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Angela & Dennis have been in business for two decades, founders/owners of the two companies listed above. Their mission and message and life’s work has been dedicated to helping others feel, perform and live at their best. All services offered are designed with this purpose. They offer their services through keynote speaking, as media resources and psychology experts, through corporate events/training, leadership development, retreats, and coaching other entrepreneurs and speakers (often to the TEDx stage). They love working independently and together as a team. They have written two books together CALM: Choosing to Live Mindfully (2011) and INSPIRED: 365 Days of Mindful Mojo (2017). They delivered a TEDx talk together at Georgia State University “Defusing Stress with Mindful Mojo.” And they are currently working on their third book on “Mindful Leadership.” They have also worked with cancer patients and their families for over 15 years in the integrative oncology space at Chapman Cancer Wellness Piedmont. After two decades of marriage and all that went along with it, they are proud and delighted that they find themselves even more deeply in love with each other than when they first met.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
We are lifelong learners and listen/read a wide variety of people, way too many to list here. As book junkies and self-identified nerds, they enjoy learning about ways humans have broken through limitations to live their best lives, personally and professionally. While they are devoted human development fans and patrons, they also know the importance of creating space internally and externally to fully integrate and practice new learning. Sometimes well-meaning people find themselves overwhelmed in information overload. It’s okay to take a breath and just be. In fact, you’ll find that feel and perform much better when you take consistent time to put the brakes on brain activity!
