Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Nash.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up loving drawing and painting. Honestly, just creating in general. It wasn’t until after I had kids that I stumbled onto my love of photography. I began taking photos of my daughter and son to document their lives but I quickly realized I could create more than just a pretty picture – I could show emotion and document more than just a moment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve definitely had my ups and downs along the way! I quickly learned that running your own business was far from easy. It’s truly a one-man show packed full of not only photographing and editing, but also advertising, emailing, branding, studying, marketing, invoicing, researching, learning, and the list goes on and on and on. Especially when starting out, my days would easy run into my nights and I found myself working 12+ hours a day to stay caught up. I started spending less time with my family and more time behind my computer.
Finding a balance has been tough at times but it’s a must! More so than that, knowing my worth has been the biggest challenge along the way. Not overworking myself and saying no has been hard but I’m getting there.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in portrait and lifestyle photography. When a client reaches out to me, I try to get to know what they envision, their likes, dislikes, and even what type of outfits they’re thinking of wearing. All of those things help me to create the perfect shoot for them individually. It’s important to me that my client’s personalities shine through in their images.
We laugh, we dance, we let loose, we have fun! I received a text from a client just today to tell me that her toddler was still talking about the ‘water spiders’ that he saw during our shoot yesterday.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think that there’s a fair amount of risk taking in running your own business, especially one that is based on your work and artistry as an individual. You have to believe in yourself, even when hard at times and believe that what you’re creating and offering to the world is worthy of others actually wanting it. To me, that’s been all risk! You risk failure, embarrassment, ridicule, and so many other things. Taking those things head-on can be scary at times for sure, but without taking those risks, you’ll always risk your dreams!
