Hidden Gems: Meet Aziza Belcher Platt of Sol Psychological Counseling, Community, and Consulting Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aziza Belcher Platt.

Hi Aziza, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a a career changer; I used to be a software developer. After my own therapist search and therapy experience, I decided I wanted to change careers and become a psychologist. I’ve been in the mental health field since 2010. My impetus was to make therapy more acceptable, accessible, and affordable particularly for marginalized communities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is there such a thing as a smooth road? It’s been a commitment that has required much sacrifice by myself and my husband. It has been a long road financially, emotionally, and academically (given all the school and training required for the PhD and licensure); however, that road as certainly been rewarding.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sol Psychological Counseling, Community, and Consulting Services LLC?
I’m a licensed Counseling Psychologist and founder/owner of Sol Psychological Counseling, Community, and Consulting (I know that’s a mouthful!). In that capacity I have several specialties including race/culture, trauma, and grief.

My practice is name Sol for 3 reasons:
1. To honor that we are souls (travelers made of light)
2. Sol (as in the sun) is life-giving, activating, energizing, growth-inducing, healing, nurturing, strengthening, renewing, and restoring. Also, I think of healing as a journey and the sun’s orbit is a journey anchoring the solar system on a grand celestial adventure while warming, sustaining, and drawing life back after cold or darkness. Sunrise is a signal of new beginnings, fresh chances, and quiet renewal; Sunlight is magic and medicine; and Sunset is proof that endings have beauty.
3. The logo is a combination of the sun and a sunflower (my favorite flower) because sunflowers always turn towards the sun because they are looking for light and I always want all of us to be seeking the light in ourselves (I promise, it’s there).

All that said, all of the services I offer under the banner of Sol Psychological Counseling, Community, and Consulting Services start with the prefix (and pretext) of Sol:
SOLo – Individual
SOLder – Relationships/Family/Friendships
SOLar System – Group
SOLace – Grief
SOLidify – Assessment
SOLiloquy – Talks
SOLidarity – Community
SOLdier – Revolution
SOLution – Consultant

What makes you happy?
What a doozy of a question?! My partner, family, and friends are an amazing source of joy and peace. I enjoy bird watching (as a woman of a certain age it sneaks up on you), comedy shows and specials, certain types of Bob Ross-ian reality shows (e.g. Great British Baking Show, Great Pottery Throwdown Great British Sewing Bee, etc.), cozy mysteries, and my plants.
