Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernard Pitts.
Hi Bernard, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always knew I wanted to be a trainer if my basketball career didn’t go how I planned but I started at an elementary school by the name of Stoneview in Lithonia, GA. I created the first basketball program there and we won the championship the very first year going undefeated. I trained all the kids in the program and to watch them grow from very little experience and be so successful cemented my calling for life. So I decided to go to school and get a degree in sports management because I wanted to start my own program. I intern with a big trainer named coach swain who allowed me to display my talent and then my name start growing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It started off very smooth but the bigger your name gets, it seems the more people start to not like you without knowing you but you just have to keep pushing through it because it’s about the kids and will always be about the kids for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pitts Academy?
I am a basketball program based out Atlanta that train athletes from the age of four to the PROS. Our attention is to develop the best version of you on and off the court. We want you to be a great athlete but also a great person off the court with good character because being a good person takes you places talent cant. The thing that separates me from others is the relationship I build with my kids which allows me to pour everything I have in them so it can translate to the court and life. I am real big on building confidence in my kids and letting them know I believe in them no matter what’s going on.
What makes you happy?
Watching these kids develop and grow doing something that loves while being happy and enjoying life at the same time. I just like to see these kids happy, become a better players, and get in school!
