Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Keenum.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins when I was 6 years old. My father had a heart attack due to clogged arteries (he survived) and my grandfather had the same thing 6 years later, and from then on I have made it a mission to always prioritze my health and wellness so that I won’t have to have open heart surgery. The doctor literallly said “you’re next in line” and I told myself I will do whatever it takes not to have that happen to me. I have always been a very active individual, from playing sports growing up, to being a part of a recreational running club, and then discovering weight lifting in high school. Once I made it to college I discovered that I wanted to help people improve their health and change their lives, so I became a personal trainer at the on-campus gym. I graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Kinesiology in 2017 and moved to Georgia in 2018. I worked for a work years at a couple of different gyms and then in 2020 I decided to start my own online nutrition coaching business, Premier Fitness and Nutrition, LLC. My goal with my business is to help change people’s lives by teaching them how to live a healthy lifestyle through the power of holistic health coaching. Improving our health is so much more than just eating the right foods and working out a few times a week, we must cultivate an environment that is optimal for our health by reducing stress, building a maintaining healthy relationships with our family/friends, getting high quality sleep, and more. I have been coaching people on how to improve their life for over 10 years now, and I do not see myself doing anything else!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road as far as business growth goes, truth be told. Some months are great, others not so much. That’s just a part of life when it comes to entrepreneurs. As with any typical coach, we prefer to be in the gym training people instead of spending time promoting ourselves on social media all day every day. However, the goal is to GROW a business and help more people, so I am now dedicating more time offering helpful advice on social media and promoting my services more.
As you know, we’re big fans of Premier Fitness and Nutrition, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is a holistic health coaching business focusing on educating people on what an individualized healthy lifestyle looks like for them. I specialize in helping women over 35 with hypothyroidism lose fat, gain their natural energy back, and ultimately thrive. I also help postmenopausal women lose fat, gain muscle and learn how to navigate that stage of life where hormonal fluctuations can be very tricky. I want those “tough client cases” where people have tried everything but can’t seem to sustain success.
What sets me apart from most other personal trainers is that I take a functional nutrition approach with my clients, meaning I look at their bloodwork to see what their lab markers are and then tailor their lifestyle optimization program around that, with the help and input of their doctors too of course. Looking at my client’s bloodwork helps me get an inside look at what is happening in my client’s body and therefore gives us so much more information to work with when it comes to designing a truly individualized fitness and nutrition program.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When it comes to running and growing your own business, I do think some level of risk taking is necessary, because quitting your job and starting your own business is already a big risk. Of course, if you have business partner(s) who are involved you will have to run big decisions by them first, and if you have a spouse then you should also inform them as well if you are thinking about starting your own business.
The biggest risk that I have taken so far was renting an expensive office for 6 months so that I could use if for content creation instead of just making a home office. This was not a great idea and i did not get a good ROI out of it, but I definitely learned from my mistake and I am back to working out of a home office because it still gets the job done. Sometimes you take risks and they work out, and sometimes they don’t. You never know until you try and I think everyone should take risks at some point in their business because whether it succeeds or fails, you will learn from it, hopefully adapt from it, and then excel.
