Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Preston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my journey into the fashion industry with my first clothing brand called “Overseas Drip” at sixteen years old. After it failed due to lack of experience, I promised myself I would come back once I was equipped with better knowledge. Fashion has always been relevant since my younger days when my parents would put me in Sean John and Rocawear, but I couldn’t see it being a career because it was just seen as a hobby. Until one day, I sat and realized a cognitive dissonance between what I felt was right in my heart and what I was doing at the time, pursuing a career in finance. After the idea clicked, the only thing left was to believe in myself and align my actions with the universe. I used my knowledge from finance and my creative passion to start “Girls From Akasha” at the beginning of 2023, a brand I used to spread enlightenment and the message of change being constant in every aspect of life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road was anything but smooth. I have endured each struggle along the way, which has only made me better in the long run. These struggles include having no supporters on drop days, low funding due to being a young entrepreneur and transitioning from various locations to see where the best place to set up is in Atlanta or where I attend school at Georgia Southern University.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Girls From Akasha?
GirlsFromAkasha was formerly known as “siddhigirl.online”, but underwent a change due to association with the likeness of another image. Girls From Akasha means “Girls From Space”, I use the word Akasha due to its Sanskrit origin and for the Akashic Records, which is a record of all events that have happened and will happen accessible to anyone who is in tune with the one song or the universe. It is a unisex brand appealing to every audience, but our initial audience was for the young black women on her way to enlightenment. We specialize in talking through fabricated pieces and spreading knowledge of self. We make clothes for the physical body and ethereal body (soul).
What sets us apart from many other brands is the authenticity and intentions the brand stands on. We produce with the best intentions in mind and stay as transparent as possible with every customer, the same things we would like to see when we are a customer anywhere else. What has made me proud as a brand owner is simply seeing the numerous styles of the people wearing my clothes; the never-ending combinations really make me smile. Other than clothes we have a strong community with over 50+ people and a handful of ambassadors at different college locations in Georgia and looking to add more. We provide custom handmade pieces per special request and host many brand events such as parties and screen printing workshops.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I learned along my journey is you have to believe in yourself before anyone else does and maintain balance. These two out of all lessons stuck with me the most because there was a time when I didn’t believe in myself, but everyone else did and I couldn’t connect with the fact people saw something in me that I couldn’t see. Balance taught me that for every up there is a down, which is where our brand motto came from “Here Before, Here After”.
