Hidden Gems: Meet Carlisa Williams of Shortyys Chair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlisa Williams.

Hi Carlisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a kid growing up I always used to play in my aunt’s hair. She eventually ended up buying me doll heads whose hair I would do just for fun. This is where I learned how to braid really well, I would do my aunt’s hair on occasions, and she would allow me to express myself the way I wanted to regardless of how it made her look. Once I got to high school I started playing with my own hair. This is where I knew I wanted to do hair for the rest of my life, it brought me so much joy and allow me to be creative. At this point, I knew how to braid well and my sister knew how to sew so I would braid her hair then I would braid own hair then she would sew her hair and turn around and sew my hair in. The next chapter in my life was college once I got to college I didn’t know how I was going to maintain my weaves being that my sister went to a different college than I did. While in school I learn how to sew my own weave which allowed me to learn different techniques and try out different styles. I started doing wigs and weaves as a side hustle in college right out of my dorm room. I eventually continue this throughout my years in college and knew that this was something that I wanted to do at the next level. Once I graduated college I came home and started working in my aunt’s hair studio. Two years later Covid hit and I made an at-home salon space to work out of my house. In high school, I knew that Atlanta was the hair capital for the hair industry and I was determined to get there. In March 2022 I picked up everything and left Seattle Washington headed towards Atlanta to start my journey over.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing has been a smooth road about my journey, I feel as though no one would probably ever have a smooth journey when trying to chase their dreams but that is life. Some of the challenges that I have faced is being able to stay consistent and to not give up. I feel as though with a lot of bumps in the road it is easy for someone to stray away from their true purpose and I feel as though the hair industry is where I’m supposed to be. Some of the new challenges that I am facing with being in a new state is just starting over from scratch, Building clientele and trying to stay consistent with social media. Even though I’ve gone through this process from the start it’s a little different when you’re picking up and starting over somewhere new.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist that specializes in sew-ins, weaves and wigs. I am known for my wig installs and my closure sew-ins. I think what sets me apart from others is my professionalism and my ability to create lasting relationships with clients. Doing hair for me is fun, I love meeting new people and the fact that I can change someone’s mood with a hairstyle is satisfying. What I’m most proud of brand-wise is the growth of my brand from when I started in college. I’ve learned so many new things, I’ve changed things 1000 times and I think the process of building a brand is rewarding in the end.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned along my journey is to never give up, I think there have been plenty of times where I’ve almost given up thinking that this wasn’t for me or that I wouldn’t get to where I wanted to be in the hair industry but without consistency, you’ll never know where life can take you. Today I look back at myself in high school when I started this hair journey as just a hobby and to look eight years later down the line in to see everything that I have accomplished and how much I have grown motivates me to go harder and to stay consistent and to never give up.
