Hidden Gems: Meet Chanel Jaali Marshall of Jaali Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanel Jaali Marshall.

Hi Chanel Jaali, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey! I’m Chanel Jaali, Sexologist and Mental Health Professional. I started this journey while getting my Bachelors degree at Georgia State University as a researcher. I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of research on Black sexuality at the time, so I decided to investigate the historical and social perspectives of Black female sexuality. While researching, I became interested in teaching sex ed so I started volunteering with local organizations Sisterlove and SisterSong, both focusing on reproductive health, rights, and justice. From there, I started my company, Jaali Co., focusing on inclusive, medically accurate, pleasure-based sex education for adults. I’ve been able to present my research nationwide and teach classes and workshops for 16 years. Additionally, I conduct HIV education for clinicians and testing with a health system. Currently, I’m in a Human Sexuality PhD program!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When you carve out space for yourself, it’s not always easy. I first had to figure out what I wanted to do and how to go about that course (leaving room for flexibility). Once I realized that there wasn’t a straight path to where I wanted to be, I decided to dive into my areas of interest and get to work. One challenge is getting people, both potential clients and institutions, to take you seriously! As a Black woman, many people don’t expect (or think it’s appropriate) that I discuss the subjects I cover or think that I’m qualified to do so. The beautiful part is the other perspective of carving out your own space; you get to create your own voice, your way!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Jaali Co.?
Jaali Co., LLC is a multidimensional company specializing in sex education for adults. We offer themed parties, consulting, workshops, and extensive research. Our purpose is to assist people in achieving sexual responsibility and sexual freedom through comprehensive knowledge. In addition to teaching classes at universities, organizations, and the community, Jaali Co. also provides services like curriculum development. I’m proud that I can meet people where they are in their journey and work with them. It’s very important that feel as comfortable and safe as possible while receiving accurate and authentic messaging.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have to say that I have an amazing community that surrounds me and supports all of my endeavors! From my parents to my inner circle to people I meet for the first time after a speaking engagement- I have always been affirmed throughout every stage of this journey. Last, I would like to shoutout my fellow Black femme sex educators/therapists/researchers. Relatively, we may be small in numbers, but we make a mighty impact! They have provided excellent examples of the myriad of ways to exist in this sexuality profession.
