Hidden Gems: Meet Chantel Baker of Jerk On The Run

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantel Baker.

Hi Chantel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello, my name is Chantel Baker me and my fiance Curtis Johnson started Jerk on the run back in 2015 we started selling dinners out of our home back in Madison, Wisconsin, and selling sweets ex banana Pudding butter cookies, etc. We started because we wanted better for our kids and show them that it’s possible to live a better life if you strive for what you want. It started off one day my hubby was at work at Menards in Wisconsin. He had Gotten paid but it was only enough to pay the rent and provide for one week worth of Gas. So we knew this was a very stressful time and so that we needed to make a change.

So that weekend we started to sell $3 jerk tacos and jerk nachos… Sense that day, my hubby knew that it was his gift, his passion and from there, we created a small business that has been growing day by day, year by year. In January 2020, we moved to Atlanta To chase our dreams. We now live in union city Georgia with our kids and now provide catering, Private dining, and dinners to the public. Also, have different pop-up shops here in Atlanta. We will continue to strive for the best and grow. Our business we have our own jerk sauce, vegan cheese, cookbooks and more that’s available at www.instagram.com/jerkontherun. My husband is the chef of the business. We are a team and we will not give up.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road it has been some ups and downs. When we moved to Georgia, we had never been here. We step out on faith in January 2020 with $318 to our names and made a move that we didn’t know if we was going prosper or not but the faith of a mustard seed kept us from not giving up and our kids. Only a dream we saw no one else did.

We’ve been impressed with Jerk On The Run, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in carribean soul food, with a twist. We are known for leaving our tastebuds in heaven. We are most proud that on our hardest days, we did not give up.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We see our jerk sauces and seasonings in Kroger and big company stores. Expect jerk on the food truck coming soon.
