Hi China, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey guys ! It’s wonderful to be here talking to you guys again first and foremost .
I started Voltaire Hair By China officially back in 2019 when I had my son . I say “officially” because I’ve always dibbled and dabbled in the hair game but I didn’t take it serious until the birth of my son Mekhi Perkins . The Covid epidemic took over that year but it only seemed to motivate me more . I would travel to homes against all odds even with the risk of potentially getting sick.I just masked up and got to work . Crazy thing is I never got Covid . I went from a very small clientele to over 300 clients in rotation in just 4 years . You could’ve never told me I would’ve gotten this far . But ,I pray to take it so much further .
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This must be a trick question lol . The road has not been smooth but it for sure has been eye opening ,educating and a blessing overall . I was located in a local barbershop for almost two years until I couldn’t take the environment any longer and was faced with my first big move on my own . It was a struggle maintaining a certain “type” of environment while being amongst other entrepreneurs in such an open space .I decided I needed my own space and my clients deserved that much from me .I was able to move into my first ever salon suite and boy was that rewarding ! I was able to set the tone in my shop as well as accommodate many different types of people with many different circumstances which was my overall goal .
As you know, we’re big fans of Voltaire Hair By China. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Voltaire Hair By China is more than an “hair appointment” . This is truly a self care no judgement haven . You are free to come in and let loose . Venture off into your craziest thoughts while being able to share ,
enjoy complimentary snacks/wine , and complete privacy during your appointments. I specialize in Loc Retwists and Styling and I am known for how neat each and every clients hair is upon completion . My hours and flexibility with policy is what I think sets me apart from others . I am a 24hr stylist available just about any time of any day to bring your hair vision to life . I do have policies in place and I am strict with a few .But ,I do understand the random things that life may bring and so I work with my people as much as I can without burdening either one of us .I personally think that’s rare being that I try to get my hair done by these new stylists too and boy oh boy let’s just say I have my “equally yoked favs”. That’s what keeps me afloat and my clients very happy though. We make this hair thing work together. I am so proud of the work I’ve put in over the years but I am most proud of how eager my clients are to help me grow my business. They are so quick to refer their entire families in a lot of cases and that speaks volumes. I would love for the readers to take from this that even though this wasn’t easy to maintain or gain ,it’s so worth it . Whatever business you may want to start , whatever dreams haunt you daily take that first step and go for it ! This all started in a corner of my bedroom almost 4 years ago & now I’m gearing towards my own salon suites building. We just gotta put that work in , you will achieve if you work . I’m still working so keep your eyes out for me on your local social media ads and local billboards .
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was that girl that knew she was special and I think everyone around me knew it too . That was a great thing but also a bad thing because I had a hard time “fitting in” . Everyone has always seemed to be so clicked up ,even now . I’ve moved over 14xs in the last 20 years and so I always had to readjust and adapt to new environments and people constantly.Because of that I don’t think there was a constant “me” . I was always , always changing who I was to try and find my people but that never actually worked. I used to HATE it! But now ,I get it . And now I can fit in just about anywhere with anyone . I still can’t believe a then young girl now woman like me has taken her weakness and created her own community . A community full of hope, love, respect,& friendship. I may not have 5 good lifelong friends but I’ve got very loyal clients that are now like my family and I wouldn’t trade them for the world .
