Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Jerry
Hi Christopher, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Brooklyn, New York but moved down to Georgia when I was around six so grew up in Lawrenceville. I graduated from Mill Creek High School up in Gwinnett and moved out to California to pursue a degree in Neuroscience, which I did at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, CA. My parents told me the only way I could to college all the way out in California was if I got it completely paid for and sure enough that is what happened. I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare and was convinced that career was a medical doctor. However, I entered a bit of a quarter life crisis my senior year at CMC and after doing the shadowing and volunteering, I got disillusioned by the traditional medical field and realized that was not how I wanted to practice. So being a broke newly grad in California, moved back to Georgia and got a random job in IT as I figured out what path I wanted to take. My parent’s had gotten into a little car accident and it was recommended that they see a chiropractor. I went with them one visit and got to talking to the doctor there, told him my history with healthcare and he suggested I’d check out Life University because chiropractic care might be a good fit for what I’m looking for in a career. When I eventually toured the campus, the tour guide put a lot of emphasis on the neurology behind chiropractic, which absolutely clicked with me. On top of that, I had always been a very hands on, touch driven person so the manual therapies associated with chiropractic and being able to assess aliments with touch and movement I really love. After graduating Life, I hit the ground running, working 6 – 7 days a week between two very different clinics. The clinic that began my home was Perkins Chiropractic Clinic up in Loganville and as it was always my professional goal to open my own practice, when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped at it and Dr. Chris Perkins has been an great mentor through the whole process. So that how I ended up here at Peachtree Corners Chiropractic!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been an easy road to reach this goal of owning a practice. Of course going through chiropractic school in of itself is grueling and never ending and left me with legitimate white hairs, then there is the fact that I graduated in the middle of a global pandemic that posed a slew of obstacles but its the challenges after graduating that really get to you. Balancing my time between working (and now working and building my practice) and spending and being involved with my family has probably been my biggest challenge. You get tunnel visioned sometimes and when you finally look up, there is a trail of missed called and cancelled gathering. So that is something I work everyday to get better with. I also struggle with mental health issues and as part of it, clinical anxiety has definitely made many aspects of running a business very difficult. It is hard to help people when you find it hard to even help yourself sometimes. But I have a great support system (which is vital for anyone with mental health problems) and my wife is absolutely my rock to make sure I am doing the things I need to do to take care of myself. In reality my wife is the biggest part of any success I have today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Here at Peachtree Corners Chiropractic we specialize in non-invasive treatments to help the body heal from neuro-musculoskeletal conditions and conditions that can be affected by dysfunction of the spine, joints, or soft tissue. We also provide wellness and maintenance care as preventative treatment and to un-do the wear and tear and stress of work, school, training and just life itself these days. We do this through gentle, manual manipulations of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints of the body (chiropractic adjustments) in addition to services such x – ray imaging to better assess and diagnose patients and electrical muscle stimulation, a traction/roller table, and therapeutic exercise area to provide soft tissue support to the chiropractic adjustments. Our goal is that through these therapies, we can get the nervous system functioning the best it can, maintain joint motion, and promote overall mobility. We pride ourselves on being a servant of the community and a place that, despite coming to see us in pain, patients look forward to visiting. Our office manager, Vanessa, is absolutely fantastic at making our patients feel comfortable and helping with whatever the patients needs. Our biggest focus is fostering a feeling of community in our office and love hearing about the lives of our patients beyond what brought them in (stay tuned for our Pet Wall!). The bottom line is we want you to leave the office feeling better, feeling positive, and feeling a little more ready to take on life!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have always taken to heart the classic saying that luck is when hard work meets opportunity. So while I do believe that random good luck or random bad luck can be a thing on a small scale, I feel like the big accomplishments in my life both personally and professionally, luck has not played a role. Owning Peachtree Corners Chiropractic today, I feel, is a direct result of sacrificing all of my 20s to be in school, forming the connections and mentorships, and working everyday to improve as a doctor. I could say that finishing school and getting started in practice during COVID was a bit unfortunate, however, it is just another obstacle to overcome. Although, moving back to Georgia from California and meeting the person that would eventually become my wife makes me feel pretty lucky.
