Hidden Gems: Meet Christy Creecy of Go Girl, Grow Girl!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Creecy.

Hi Christy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I absolutely love subscription boxes! While in college at Bethune-Cookman University, I would scrape any extra money I had together to purchase the latest affordable box. As a struggling student, it was one luxury I made sure to afford myself every month. The boxes were a special part of my self-care routine and I got to try products that I did not have the time or patience to find myself. I would excitedly count down the days until my next box and when I finally got it, I would think, “Ahhh, finally my little bundle of utopia!”. I loved being able to indulge in products that defined my dream lifestyle instead of my current broke, college student reality.

While I adored my boxes, one thing became clear as each one came—most of the products were not designed for people like me. The shampoo would be catered towards women with fine hair but, what about my thick and curly tresses? The makeup would have beige undertones and never fully complimented my skin’s golden-brown hues. I knew that luxury beauty products from Black-Owned companies existed so, why was I not seeing them? Why were products made for black women not as readily available? As I researched further, I learned that not only did the caliber of products I was looking for exist; there were plenty that was equal to and better than the ones I had been frequently exposed to.

I took the knowledge from that research and began compiling lists of a variety of quality merchandise from Black and Minority-Owned businesses. My subscription box aims to allow these companies to showcase their products and expand their audience to women who would also like to find their little bundle of utopia so we can all GO GIRL, GROW GIRL!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has been anything but smooth, LOL! But, every bump has been a learning lesson helping me gain a better perspective of being a small business owner. Like most up-and-coming businesses, money is always a factor. There hasn’t been a profit for me just yet, but being that this company is only three months in, I’m not expecting a profit anytime soon. What’s the saying? “It takes money to make money,” yeah, that’s where I’m at. Brand awareness is another obstacle I have faced as well. I know I have a great product, but how do I put my brand on a platform for people to see? It is all a learning curve for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Go, Girl, Grow Girl! is a bi-monthly subscription box service that caters to your self-care and wellness needs. Each box contains four handmade curated items from black and minority-owned businesses, plus a small plant for you to grow with! In every box, you will find something that appeals to your taste, touch, smell, earth, and soul.

Self-Care is something that has been seen as a luxury for many women when it should be a part of our daily lives. For many women, we give so much energy to work, home, and family that by the time we lay our heads down at night we have nothing left to give ourselves. Don’t you deserve to take some time out of your day to do something just for yourself? That’s where we come in! We provide self-care boxes already filled with items to love yourself with.

Go, Girl, Grow Girl has a different themed box every other month so no two boxes will be the same! Every box will also feature different BIPOC businesses with their information if you’d like to purchase more of that product.

We have two boxes so far, our Rest & Relaxation and Honey box. The R&R box includes a sage smudge stick, calming nighttime tea, smooth lavender body butter, a delicious smelling soy candle, and a Tillandsia Ionantha air plant! Our Honey box includes a jar of raw honey from soothing Vanilla-Honey body soap, Oatmeal & Honey bath salt, Shea Honey Lip Balm, and Wildflower seed bombs that turn into beautiful wildflowers to help bees pollinate the earth!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I would say the most important lesson I’ve learned as a small business owner is patience. Patience is knowing that selling one box this week may turn into two boxes next week. Patience is understanding that 12 likes on a post does not equate to a failing business. Patience is understanding that just because someone didn’t buy a box doesn’t mean they don’t support my business. They could’ve told 12 others about my business and made more waves that way! Patience is knowing that my business won’t grow overnight; hell, it’s still in its growing stage. But it’s growth nonetheless, and for that, I’m forever grateful! I’m extremely proud of where we are and excited for what the future holds.
