Hidden Gems: Meet Crystal Jackson of O’dara Doula services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Jackson.

Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Journey started at just 8 years old! I used to watch a TV show called “A baby story” and I was OBSESSED! I knew then I wanted to be a part of the birthing process! I made healthcare a part of my career my entire working life, but my true calling has always been childbirth! After years of shadowing, researching and schooling, I found myself working alongside the best in the Labor and delivery field! But somehow I still felt out of place. I officially met my first Doula while I was working as an NICU aide. She explained to me what her job all entailed and I was so intrigued! She allowed me to shadow a birth at her birthing center and I got HOOKED! Not realizing I had already served as a doula to friends and families throughout my lifetime and I was so excited to know it was a profession! I immediately dove into my research and taking plenty of classes! I learned that there were several different levels and types of doulas to which I took on two other specialties (sex and postpartum). I truly love what I do and I plan on doing it for the rest of my life!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has NOT been easy! Being a business is never easy. But when your going against “ Big Pharma” and western medical practices, it’s constant war!

I make it my business to serve the POC community and we are constantly trying to get equal rights when it come to care. Black women are 90% more likely to die in childbirth than any other race. As a doula, it’s my job to make sure your voice is heard and you feel supported! Safety is my number one objective for mom and baby! Just making sure everyone gets care they deserve is very challenging believe it or not.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about O’dara Doula Services?
My business name comes from Yoruba language meaning “It is well” That’s the basis of my business. All things are well and balanced.

I’ve branded myself as “The Homie Doula” all my clients are family and I treat them as such!

I specialize in holistic medicine dealing with ancestral practices. My services are Birth, Sex(Intimacy), and postpartum. I teach classes for men and women! Plus size births/intimacy is also a specialty.

My mission is to service my community who often gets looked over or not understood because of their color. I am the heal women through the most vital parts of their life Sex(intimacy with self and a partner), birth, and postpartum. I want every woman to get the care she needs and help black/POC women experience luxury in the form of a doula!

Brand wise I’m most proud of the fact I am the homegirl that most didn’t know they needed!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson is Keep God first. Nothing I do or want to do can be done without The Lord!
