Today we’d like to introduce you to Curnesia Bogans, MFT, LMFT.
Hi Curnesia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My candle company was inspired by my clients. Prior to the Pandemic, I worked in a private practice and saw clients in person. Without much of a warning, therapists were immediately required to see clients through telehealth and the private practice offices were shut down until further notice. I had little to no time to prepare my clients as well as take on the roles I personally had in life. With this sudden change, I wanted to give my clients a sense of familiarity, even if it was through an online experience. One thing my clients always looked forward to when coming in my office was which candle I would burn for the session. I frequently burned candles in my office during therapy sessions. The candles would be dependent on the type of work that was ahead of me for the day. If I knew the client was coming in with great news, I would select a candle that was vibrant, zesty and fun. If a client had tough, deep-rooted work, I would select something more relaxing and calming. Keeping all this in mind, I decided to invest in myself and create a luxury candle line that fit the exact needs of my clients as well as myself as a therapist! I gave myself a year to learn the candle business and curate unique, intentional scents for my candles. The rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t exactly call the road smooth. With the candle industry constantly evolving as well as the constant inflation of our economy, my candle business can have its days of challenges. I’m thankful to have customers that value the mission of our business and continue to invest in us.

InSession Candles is a candle company that believes in celebrating the intangible work of our customers. Our customers are often doing the tough work to become a better version of themselves that isn’t always immediately recognizable by those they know and love. Another unique lay of our candle company is that we hand-pour our candles with coconut and apricot wax. The oils we use do not contain toxins such as carcinogens, phthalates, and mutagens. We also create unique oil blends that can serve as mood enhancers. Our wicks are 100% cotton and we take pride in being as intentionally eco-friendly as possible.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The overall best quality that is most important to our success is our ability to be transparent and honest about who we are as a company and how we serve. We truly believe in encouraging our customers to continue to do the intangible work necessary to live the best version of life they desire.
