Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrice Dixon
Hi Demetrice , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as a hairstylist started in middle school, By age 15 i had a clientele and was an assistant in a salon. ON august 1, 2000 at the age of 21, I opened my first salon. Within a year i had a full staff and began to outgrow that location, so I relocated to a bigger space. After a year of owner / operating, I became an educator for Avlon Industries, a global multi-texture hair care product company. I did that for 4 years before moving into working behind the scenes of music videos. That lasted for a few years. In 2008, I decides to go full throttle into film and television. After only 6 shorts month, work came to an abrubt halt, causing me to return to the salon with NO CLIENTS. all of my clients had found other service providers. That’s when i started rebuilding. I immedeitly knew it was time to start a real business strategy, if I was going to survive business ownership AND work in film and tv. For 4 years i stategized , mastered my systems and did BOTH. After 4 short years, I was ready to go back into film and tv full time. I landed my first gig back as a background hairstylist at Tyler Perry Studios. The rest was history (refer to resume)
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it has not. I became a mother at 19 a wife at 20 and a homeowner at 21. Being a salon owner at a young age came with many challenges. But having a family brought on the sacrifices. Now i KNOW that obedience is better than sacrifice!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Demi Dixon Beasuty and Film Co. and Demi INC?
my beauty company was established in 2000. For the past 25 years I have ONLY operated in the beauty Indusrty. In 2005, I started working behind the scenes of music. I worked with artists like Nivea, The Dream and Jagged Edge, all in Atlanta GA.
As I always knew since 16, I wanted to work behind the scenes with celebrities after seeing the Movie Bap. That was my first inspiration.
Shortly after , In 2008, I got my first gig on an independent tv show. The pay wasn’t that great so I essentially was losing. But I gained lessons and experience. Which helped me learn to properly strategize and create systems for my business.
My film business began at that moment. I researched, Took classes and built relationships that i wasn’t letting go of!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
My industry is ForEveR evolving! I have gone global by way of my daughter who lives in London currently working in the industry there. Hopefully that is where I will be in 5-10 years
