Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Charlene Brown of Brookhaven Dental Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Charlene Brown.

Hi Dr. Brown, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m a native of New Orleans, LA but have called Atlanta “home” for nearly two decades. My path to Dentistry was a bit of a different journey. Unlike many of my colleagues, my course of study was not always science based. In fact, I received a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Business. Both, proudly from Florida A&M University. Upon graduating, I entered the business world; leading to success in business management and consulting positions at some of the country’s top Fortune 500 companies. Despite my advancement and success in Corporate America, something was missing. Over the years, I continued to feel a strong interest and growing passion for dentistry, a professional pursuit I had always dreamed of but never pursued.

In 2011, I made the decision to leave behind my consulting career to pursue dentistry. Not only was I embarking on a complete career change, but I was entering an arena that most of my peers began fresh out of undergrad. This decision was not an easy one but it has been rewarding in more ways than I can count. Deciding to pursue Dentistry has changed my life. It has changed not only who I am fundamentally but this singular decision has also altered the trajectory of not only my life but that of my family’s as well. My passion for dentistry and patient care is at the core of my life and practice. I am immensely grateful to be able to love what I do and live my dream.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Getting to where I am today in my dental practice has not been an easy road. In spite of my extensive business experience, rooted in helping businesses troubleshoot, strategize and problem solve, I quickly learned that being the business owner and putting theory into practice is not always an easy or seamless process. As a business owner, I must wear many hats. I am not only the primary Clinician, but also must have oversight and direct management over all aspects of the business, including managing direct reports, growing and driving revenue, even general maintenance of the facility. I was also not afforded the support of family or a close network with a similar experience of being an entrepreneur. The “ropes to skip and the ropes to know” of navigating my own business has been organically learned and now applied versus handed down, which does slow the speed of success. In spite of all these challenges, I am proud to have celebrated 3 years in private practice and am continuously grateful for my patients, my BDG team, as well as colleagues that have dedicated themselves to supporting the growth of my business.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Brookhaven Dental Group is a boutique dental practice in Brookhaven/North Atlanta, Ga. specializing in comprehensive dental care. We pride ourselves in offering our patients exceptional service and transparent care. Our first step is to get to know our patients and their dental goals. From there, we develop comprehensive treatment plans and walk our patients through every step, ensuring that they are fully engaged with and informed of their treatment plan. Taking a collaborative approach to patient care, recognizing that the patient’s understanding, willingness, and trust in their treatment plan and in our team is imperative in the overall success of their oral health. Oftentimes in dentistry, patients aren’t necessarily trusting or have “bought into” their recommended treatment and this is where the disconnect occurs. From our initial conversation with the patient, to completion of their dental goals, through annual maintenance, our success is based on the patient being a part of the process from start to finish.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
While dentistry is my professional passion, music and books are what have my heart. Since I was a small child, I’ve found myself drawn to music of different genres and its ability to not only express my own inner feelings and emotions but also connect people to one another through shared experiences and basic humanity. As a child, both music and reading were outlets for me to understand myself more fully, as well as have a broader understanding of the world around me. They both allowed me to leave my own surroundings and become immersed in a whole world outside my own.
