Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Karin Davis of Rejuvenescence Oral & Facial Surgery, Dental Implants, and Cosmetics; Rejuvenescence Med Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Karin Davis.

Hi Dr. Karin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From small town beginnings to a career that has expanded into medicine, dentistry, and oral surgery, let me take you on a journey into the life. I recall being somewhat of a shy child who had a very big imagination and would often day dream about being a singer, but my inquisitive nature aided in my matriculation through grammar school where biology courses fascinated me and helped to jump start my path into the medical field. Once I graduated from high school, I decided I would apply for technical school and was accepted into the Surgical Technology program; however, the trajectory of my life would be changed on one ride home after school with a former teacher of my mine, Mrs. Wilmatine Washington. Upon sharing with her my plans, I was strongly encouraged to attend a 4 year university because she saw an ability in me that I had not yet recognized in myself. It was from that day forward that I decided to apply to a 4 year college and change the path of my adult life. Thank you Mrs. Washington for being an influential figure in my early formative years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have experienced quite a few adversities along the way to becoming a Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. In high school I had a teacher tell me that I would never achieve anything. There were some higher education financial challenges but I was determined to persevere. I dealt with the loss of my father, the loss of my beloved maternal grandmother and endured sexual harassment all while in residency but still I thrived. Race relations seem to never dissipate no matter what and have been experienced throughout my life. On a positive note, having trained in medicine prior to dental school helped to create the harmonious union between surgery, dentistry and medicine I get to practice everyday in my specialty.

Being a female solo practitioner business owner is no easy feat, especially in a historically male dominated specialty but I love the career I chose. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery not only allows me to perform a variety of surgical procedures which include teeth removal, dental implant placement, and so much more in the office but, I am also trained to treat severe head/neck infections, repair complex lacerations & facial fractures in the hospital setting. Residency training also introduced me to several cosmetic procedures I can perform to give clients the more desired youthful appearance he or she would like to achieve as well. This year I even decided to officially create a separate esthetics brand to expound upon this skillset. I also have a very artistic side and absolutely love to design and decorate residential & commercial spaces. I’ve been told that I am a literally a Jill of all Trades, but ultimately I love being able to provide numerous services under one roof.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Recently I have discovered that taking a few minutes each day to read a motivational script or to play a quick cognitive strengthening game between appointments helps me to recharge. Listening to podcasts have become a favorite past time during the commute to and from the office since I have less time to read books for leisure.
