Hi Ebony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story as a licensed massage therapist began in 2017, while my story as an entrepreneur began in 2020. I started working as a massage therapist for different corporate companies. I would frequently hear people tell me: “You’re so good at this. You should really go into business for yourself.” Originally, I was not interested in going into business for myself. With time, I started becoming more comfortable with the idea of starting my own business. It took a lot of research, courage, and prayer. Until this day, that still holds to be true. I’ve been incredibly blessed to be where I am today. I’m the proud owner of Ebony’s Massage Escape, LLC located in Douglasville, GA. I’ve made it to where I am today by boldly pressing forward. I make a conscious decision to reach a new goal every day and not let up when things get tough.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I tell you entrepreneurship can be GHETTO sometimes. WHEW. No, it has not been a smooth road. The pros outweigh the cons, but MAN. The first hurdle that comes to mind is our water pipe burst in 2022. It took us out of our suite for a couple of months! We had other choices, but being displaced for that long was mentally and financially taxing. Fast forward to 2024, I’m abruptly woken up at 5am. I go to check the alarm system, and there’s a crime scene investigator in the office parking lot. I get there, and there are glass doors and windows that are shattered on the ground. Turns out, several offices in the area had been broken into by someone who wasn’t in their right mind. No one was hurt, and nothing was taken. We just got caught in the line of fire. Then, there’s the frequent struggle of inconsistent bookings, client/therapist relationship dynamics, last-minute cancellations, inappropriate client behavior, societal pressures on social media marketing, high tax bills, trying to maintain work and life balance, and just the heavy responsibility of completing entrepreneurial work. I haven’t even talked about trying to upkeep the costs of running a small business in THIS economy.

I’m a licensed massage therapist, certified stretch coach, and medical-massage practitioner specializing in massage, stretch, and sauna therapy. My company, Ebony’s Massage Escape, offers all of the above, plus essential oils and CBD products. My technique is strictly therapeutic and aims to address imbalances that may take place within the human body. I come highly recommended within the Atlanta community, and I’m well known for my professionalism and personable manner. What sets me apart from others is my genuine commitment to enhancing my client’s quality of life, honest service, and dedication to providing a safe environment for each individual.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
COVID-19 taught me the importance of faith. We were in a predicament where no one knew what to expect or how to move forward. Thankfully, my family and I made it out financially and healthily sound. That alone helped me recognize that as daunting as something may seem, it will be all right when you rely on your higher power. It also taught me to be open to learning new trades. Due to the nature of my work, I was 100% out of work because of the shelter-in-place. It made me think hard about my next career move. As much as I love massage therapy, I do feel limited in what services I can offer. Being in isolation helped me learn the importance of honing different skills and managing multiple streams of income. I’ve already come such a long way since 2020, but with God’s help, I’m looking forward to transitioning from one trade to the next.
