Today we’d like to introduce you to Fayette Humane Society Fayette County, GA.
Hi Fayette Humane Society, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Who is the Fayette Humane Society?
• We are a 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue group, run entirely by volunteers (including our 9-member Board of Directors) supported by donations, grants, and fundraising activities.
• We are not affiliated with the government-funded Fayette County Animal Shelter.
• We do not have a physical location; all our rescued cats and dogs are cared for in foster homes until they can be adopted. (All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption.) We hold regular adoptions at the Peachtree City PetSmart store on weekends.
Mission Statement:
Fayette Humane Society advocates for animals, supports the community, and enhances pet/owner relationships through spay/neuter programs, rehoming & adoption services, and community education and outreach.
Vision:
Fayette Humane Society envisions a community where all companion animals in Fayette County are spayed/neutered and treated with compassion and respect.
Values:
We act with compassion, respect, fairness, forward vision, teamwork, and stewardship
What we do:
• Assist low-income pet owners with veterinary and other pet expenses.
• Accept surrendered pets from families whose situation has changed.
• Care for and find new homes for rescued cats and dogs.
• Educate the public about pet care, the importance of spay/neuter, and other animal issues.
• Trap, neuter, vaccinate, return free-roaming, community cats to their outdoor homes.
• Hold annual Fayette Love Your Pet (FLYP) event
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Funding has always been an issue. The more donations we receive, the more people and animals we can help.
Not having a building keeps our overhead low, but there are challenges: finding a place for meetings, training sessions, storage of supplies.
The cats and dogs we rescue are cared for in foster homes, but it might be nice to have a central place to house animals awaiting foster placement.
Also, many people continue to confuse us with the county-owned and operated animal shelter. While we try to work together, we are different organizations.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are the oldest 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue organization in Fayette County, established in 1973. We do not have a physical location. The cats and dogs we rescue are cared for in foster homes, and we bring them to the Peachtree City or the Fayetteville PetSmart store on weekends for adoption events.
We are run entirely by volunteers (no paid staff) and receive no government funding. We rely on donations, grants, and fundraisers for our operating expenses.
The cats and dogs we rescue are all spayed or neutered, microchipped, treated for parasites, and receive age-appropriate vaccines prior to being placed for adoption. We charge an adoption fee, but most of the time, it doesn’t cover the expenses we incur to prepare the animal for adoption.
We accept surrendered animals from pet owners who can no longer care for them. We also pull cats and dogs from the local animal shelter when they’re full and risk euthanizing some for space.
We are a no-kill rescue group.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We take risks whenever we approve an adoption application. Although we screen for certain criteria, trying to ensure a good fit, there’s always a chance that it won’t work out.
