Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Key.
Hi Felicia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In search of a career to provide more flexibility in my schedule, I became interested in property management from a conversation I had with a baseball mom one day. So I decided to go to real estate school and get a CAM (community association management) license and start my journey into property management. After passing the state exam and receiving my license, I applied to multiple property management companies in Atlanta. However, no company would give me a chance due to my lack of experience in the field. Fast forward to a year later and still no luck with a position, my now husband decided to use his first home he purchased as a short-term rental property and we listed it on Air BnB. I quickly learned how to use Air BnB and managed the property. Friends and family with property started to ask questions and became interested in short-term rental options for their properties and asked if I could help. Due to the overwhelming inquiries, my husband suggested that I start my own property management company since no company would give me a chance.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been challenges along the way. I’ve had to constantly re-evaluate my systems in place to prevent issues. I’ve experienced tough and disrespectful clients and I’ve lost a couple of properties. I am constantly working to balance my marriage, motherhood, and being a full-time entrepreneur for two businesses.
