Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallema Sharif.
Hi Hallema, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From an early age, I was driven by a relentless ambition to make an impact and carve out my path in the world of communications. I began volunteering at WYES TV Channel 12 in New Orleans at just 17 years old, under the mentorship of the remarkable Carleen Dunn, a seasoned Producer at the station during that time. My parents, recognizing my passion, provided unwavering support, instilling in me the ethos of creating my own opportunities.
Despite being offered admission to prestigious universities like Spelman, Howard University, and University of Southern California (USC), I chose Xavier University of Louisiana, drawn to its vibrant community and commitment to excellence. My time at Xavier was a transformative experience, where I learned the importance of community and the value of embracing diverse perspectives. I continued volunteering at WYES throughout my college years, immersing myself in all facets of production, from operations to writing.
Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a determination to succeed, I sought out opportunities beyond the classroom. I joined multiple organizations and attended conferences in media, public relations, and communications, including the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the National Black Media Coalition (NBMC). I even worked as a DJ for the Blind at WRBH in New Orleans, not only to gain experience but also to access conferences in radio and TV.
In the absence of modern technological conveniences, I navigated the landscape with sheer determination and resourcefulness. Armed with nothing but Yellow Pages, libraries, and business cards, I pursued every avenue to expand my horizons. Even during my tenure at City Hall, where I served on various boards and commissions, I remained committed to broadening my knowledge and influence.
In my early twenties, I had the privilege of working with ABC National News, then known as Capital Cities ABC News, where I collaborated with esteemed mentors and industry icons like Chuck Schaeffer, former Executive Producer for CNBC, and legendary journalists Peter Jennings, and Sam Donaldson. These experiences were pivotal in shaping my understanding of the media landscape and honing my skills.
Following my tenure at ABC National News, I continued to make strides in the media industry, contributing to renowned platforms like BET in DC. Working alongside icons such as Donnie Simpson and Alvin Jones, I gained invaluable insights and further solidified my resolve to make a lasting impact. Additionally, my involvement in serving on the boards of the Essence Music Festival and the Jazz and Heritage Foundation provided me with unique perspectives and opportunities for growth.
Throughout my extensive journey, which spanned several years abroad, I have had the privilege of living and working in diverse domestic and international settings. This immersive experience has profoundly enriched my perspective and approach to communication, equipping me with invaluable insights into global dynamics and cultural nuances.
Today, as the founder of HS Global Communications Collaborators LLC and Catalyst Collective Initiatives LLC, I draw upon the wealth of experiences garnered throughout my journey. From contributing to renowned platforms like a local PBS station to shaping influential national initiatives, each step has profoundly influenced my approach to communication and inclusivity.
Additionally, as a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for over 35 years, I remain dedicated to upholding the values of sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating my journey hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. In fact, it’s been riddled with challenges and obstacles that I’ve had to overcome. As a young mother and wife, I found myself thrust into adulthood with a steep learning curve. I’ll be the first to admit that I was completely clueless, but I’m eternally grateful for my village—my parents, siblings, spiritual community, and countless others—who provided unwavering support and guidance during those formative years.
Despite facing adversity, I’ve always held onto my personal motto: ‘Keep it Moving.’ It’s a mantra that I live by and share with audiences, clients, and anyone in need of daily motivation. Through layoffs, budget cuts, and organizational changes at PR firms and TV stations, I’ve learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. I’ve made it a point to stay ahead of the game, forecasting shifts in the industry and preparing accordingly.
The decision to create Hallema’s World, now H S Global Communications Collaborators, alongside Catalyst Collective Initiatives LLC, was born out of necessity. I recognized the need to remain relevant in an ever-evolving landscape and to anticipate the next wave of changes. Being proactive rather than reactive has been key to my success.
Continuous learning has also been a cornerstone of my journey. I’m a firm believer in the power of education and self-improvement. Whether it’s through reading, research, or seeking out new experiences, I’ve always strived to expand my knowledge and skill set. This willingness to be a perpetual student has kept me ahead of the curve and equipped me with the tools to navigate any challenges that come my way.
So, has it been a smooth road? Far from it. But each hurdle has been an opportunity for growth and learning, reinforcing my resilience and determination to as I said …. ‘Keep it Moving.’
