Hidden Gems: Meet Heather Odeh of Alloy Personal Training Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Odeh

Hi Heather, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my fitness career in the late 80’s teaching step and dance aerobics. I was a professional dancer in Miami, Florida and it was a way I could have a fun job that kept me in shape along with all my dance classes I took. I was performing with 2 separate dance companies and also worked a lot of commercial dance jobs.. I graduated from New World School of the Arts in 1992 with a dance degree and took upper-level anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. I love learning about how the body works. While working in a gym teaching aerobics and weight classes, a previous dancer/personal trainer approached me. She mentored me and I got my personal training certification and began training clients. My now husband and I moved to Atlanta in 1994 and we worked in various gyms all over Atlanta. In 1999 my husband and I opened up Formwell Personal Training and for 19 years had a very successful personal training business. We raised two children in the meantime. Owning our own business gave me the freedom to be a stay-at-home mom and make a schedule that allowed me to work part-time while they were in school. In 2019 we sold Formwell. I missed training clients and a good friend had started a franchise called Alloy Personal Training. My husband and I decided to purchase a number of Alloy franchises. Currently two locations. Sandy Springs and Buckhead. are opened with more to come! I am currently the director at Alloy Personal Training Buckhead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road of entrepreneurship has certainly had its ups and downs. Building a business, especially in the fitness industry, is incredibly rewarding, but it comes with challenges. One of the toughest times for us was during the economic downturn in 2013. Like many small businesses, we felt the impact as clients tightened their budgets, and new memberships slowed down. We had to be creative and resilient to keep our doors open. That year taught us how important it is to stay adaptable, focus on delivering value, and keep close connections with our clients. We started adding small group training options to make our services more accessible, as well as boot camps for a smaller price point to fitness which ended up being a great fit for our community and helped us bounce back stronger.

Being an entrepreneur means constantly adjusting and learning, but it’s worth it to see the impact we make on people’s lives. Those experiences have made us stronger and better equipped for future challenges.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
