Today we’d like to introduce you to Janel Mitchell.
Hi Janel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started making wigs my freshman year of college. I was taught how to make handmade wigs from my Best friend Megan. I loved how convenient and easy they were to apply. I wore wigs all the time and people on campus started to ask me who did my hair. I always discredited my talent until my family and friends encouraged me to become a wig maker. It took me some time but eventually I started my brand “Nailedbynel”.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting out, I had an extremely hard time gaining clientele. I would only cater to my hometown until I discovered my target audience. I went home for a weekend and had eight clients who all canceled on me. I took a pause from my business my first year, I honestly gave up. I eventually discovered how to effectively work Instagram and built my own audience of complete strangers who support me daily. I created a space that I could grow and learn from. It’s very important to know your target audience. After self-reflection and rebranding, my business started to expand worldwide.

Nailedbynel was created for beginner and advanced wig owners. It is a brand that has a large variety of custom wigs with different colors, styles, lengths, etc. Nel specializes in natural-looking lace wigs with the perfect customization. Giving my clients the opportunity to try new looks without damaging their natural hair. Nailedbynel has shipped to over 28 states and offers worldwide shipping.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important thing I’ve learned is to have crazy faith. Always believe for bigger and be prepared when it happens. Entrepreneurship is not easy it requires crazy faith. With faith anything is possible. It’s also important to write the vision down and make it plain.
