Hidden Gems: Meet Jeanne Uwimbabazi of Logan Oliver Design Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanne Uwimbabazi.

Hi Jeanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and partially raised in Rwanda, Africa. Due to the genocide, my family and I relocated to Kenya for a couple of years. After years in refugee camps, my father raised enough money with a local church to bring us all to the United States. My life has always been set for me, I was never supposed to be an interior designer. Like many immigrant children, it is drilled in us to pursue high-earning degrees. I went through with the original plan, graduated undergrad with dual degrees, and later earned two masters. While working towards my Master’s in Information Technology, I was a Professor and Director of Academic Advising/ Mentoring at Bennett college. These days I work full time as an engineer and as a designer. My interior design career started as early as undergrad. I was the Marketing Director for a student housing company named Campus Advantage. Part of my job was to find new ways to attract more residents. I staged all the apartments for viewing and started staging for local apartment complexes. Once I started to document and show off my work on social media, the responses from my followers was such a wake-up call. That’s when I made the decision to start a full-service design firm.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Far from perfect for sure. I think being a new business owner alone has its challenges. My background has always been in STEM-related degrees/careers. So I never bothered with the business courses. Designing is what I do and I love it but the business side is what I continue to work on each day. Everything from registering the business down to invoices has all been a learning curve. But it has also forced me out of my bad habit for perfectionism. I continue to choose faith over fear and move forward all while learning.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Aw man, it takes very little for me to be happy. I’ve found pure happiness in mothering my children, design, and the time I spend with friends and family. As I get older, I’ve come to the conclusion that how I spend my time matters. And so– I choose to spend my time with my children, my designs, and my friends and family. So, essentially for me, fulfillment, joy, happiness are all synonymous in those moments.
