Hidden Gems: Meet Jenni Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Brown.

Hi Jenni, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in a small town outside of Austin, Texas. I have a very large family and was involved in sports throughout high school and college. School always came easy to me but growing up. I surrounded myself with people who were not the best influence. I got my first job at 14 and always saw financial independence as the ultimate freedom. I graduated high school at 16, college, and then law school. My parents went through a nasty divorce when I was in 5th grade. I knew far more than a child should at my age. I went to law school knowing I would get into family law after graduation. I am now a business owner, lawyer, mediator, mom and wife.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had different struggles at different times in my life. In high school, it was staying away from the “wrong crowd.” In college, it was dating the wrong guys. However, I had to figure out that I didn’t want the type of life that I was headed towards myself. Moving away to Law School was my saving grace. I met great friends, my future husband and ended up finding where I was supposed to be.

Starting a business was scary. I’m not one to take financial risks. I thrive with security so being the one that is running the business was a very scary decision. However, I’m blessed to have an amazing team that helps with every step along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your practice?
I was lucky enough to start my company with my best friend, Lance Dutton. We met about nine years ago, and honestly, I wasn’t sure about him for the first year or so. He has bad jokes (that I now love) and was overly welcoming to me when I met him, which made me instantly not trust him. However, I was wrong about him. He is truly the best friend and business partner I could wish for. We primarily focus on family law matters, although Lance is also an extremely talented criminal law attorney. Our other partner is Tracy Crider. She could not be more different than Lance but is just as awesome. She is kind, loving and has a bleeding heart for anyone around her. She’s a fierce advocate and an extreme asset to our firm.

We are known for walking side by side with our clients and seeing them through the toughest time of their life. I’m extremely proud of my in-house marketing team. They make me push my limits on my comfort zone and learn new things like Tiktok and Instagram stories on a weekly basis. I want people to know and understand that if they are going to going through a life change (divorce, custody case, criminal charges) there is light at the end of the tunnel and we will stand by them through the difficult time they are having.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I think something I continue to realize throughout my career is how little I know. I seriously learn something every day. It may be about human resources, or business planning, or something specific in my field. I would encourage everyone to never stop learning. You can learn from every single person you meet. It might be a life lesson about their personal story; it might be a simple tax tip you didn’t know about. However, soak up every single minute you have and take every opportunity to learn as much as you can.
