Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Fantroy.
Hi Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m just starting my dog training business, Paws and Lessons, here in the Atlanta area. I’ve always had an affinity for animals. All animals really, but of course the ones most accessible to me were dogs. So consequently, helping dogs and their families succeed together has been my passion since I was a kid. I’ve been working with dogs my whole life and know how much love and dedication goes into raising a new puppy or even a rescued dog.
The first few weeks you spend with your puppy can make such a difference. I love to help you people along that journey. Then, there are situations where problems arise later in the dog’s life. I also enjoy helping people to understand their dog better, even if they’ve had them for years. I have a ton of experience working with adopted dogs and new puppies, working to help them feel secure and comfortable in their new homes. I can confidently say that I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs and every kind of dog personality one can think of (and the behaviors to match).
With 13 years of professional dog experience, I’ve dedicated my career to understanding canine behavior. Starting right after high school at an open-play facility, I spent 6-12 hours daily observing dogs and their complex interactions. I trained staff on preventing fights, managing inappropriate behaviors, and ensuring safe play environments. The knowledge I gathered allowed me to develop my training program that I refer to as “Paws and Lessons”. Now I offer private sessions and Board and Train packages. I have close to 90 5 star reviews on Thumbtack. And I’m excited to continue growing my reputation.
Every dog is different. My superpower is about figuring out what’s going on with each one individually and making it work for the client and their lifestyle, Thank you for the opportunity to share my story
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, my biggest hurdles are happening now! Trying to spread my name and reputation. Thumbtack works great, but I need more of exposure.
I also have a 6 year old daughter that lives with me every 2 weeks. So during those weeks my days are less flexible
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I train dogs. I train dogs in behavior modification, socialization and also basic to intermediate commands.
I am known for my ability to connect to a dog quickly and get results in the first session.
What sets me apart from other trainers is my unorthodox approach, I rarely use treats, and my teaching style varies from family to family. Depending on the dog’s personality.
In addition to my one one sessions, for those with little time or busy schedules, I offer board and train packages.
I am most proud that 99% of my interactions results in a high rating and my reviews reflect that
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I took a risk with my business by making this my only way to make money. It forces me to strive for greatness with every opportunity because my reputation is the only way that I will grow. So everything I do is calculated
