Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Drake.
Hi Joy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started building websites in 2003, when e-commerce was still new and most businesses were just trying to figure out what the internet meant for them. I earned my degree in e-commerce and jumped into design and digital marketing, working with brands like TGI Fridays, Texas Roadhouse, coaches in the John Maxwell community, and hundreds of other clients who needed marketing that actually worked.
Over time, I realized I wasn’t just a designer — I’m a systems thinker.
I love helping leaders see the vision clearly. Most organizations don’t struggle because they lack passion or ideas. They struggle because their processes are scattered, their tools don’t talk to each other, and their teams are buried in manual work.
So I build better systems.
What started with streamlining communications and workflows evolved into automation, reporting frameworks, and AI-powered solutions that free teams up to focus on growth instead of busywork. That’s how AgentJoy was born.
Today, I consult with leaders to clarify where they’re going and implement solutions that actually solve real problems — whether that’s smarter workflows, connected platforms, automation, or AI tools that support sustainable growth.
I don’t chase trends. I build infrastructure that works.
And at the end of the day, I help leaders move from scattered to strategic — and then we build from there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
In 2008, when the marketing world crashed, I lost some of my biggest clients almost overnight. That season forced me to rethink everything — pricing, positioning, and who I was building for. It was my first real lesson in resilience.
Then in 2011, my daughter had a stroke.
We lived at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for months. Recovery took years — therapy three times a week, constant appointments, and a completely different pace of life. That season didn’t instantly change my business model, but it changed me. It made me more aware of time, margin, and what really mattered.
For years after that, I was still building, still working hard, still figuring it out. I underpriced my work. I was hesitant to charge what I was worth. I said yes too often. I learned boundaries the hard way — including walking away from clients who weren’t healthy to work with, even when it cost me.
Around 2020, another shift came. Technology accelerated. Automation and AI moved quickly. That’s when everything started to connect. I realized I didn’t just want to execute projects — I wanted to design systems. Subscription-based models. Scalable solutions. Infrastructure that didn’t depend entirely on me trading hours for income.
It took years to refine. But in the most recent seasons, I’ve finally dialed it in.
Today, I build smarter. I charge appropriately. I solve bigger problems. And I design systems that create sustainability — because I’ve lived what it feels like when life forces you to adapt.
It hasn’t been easy. But it’s been shaping.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
AgentJoy is a Black woman–owned AI and systems consulting firm that my husband and I built together to help businesses simplify how work gets done.
I work with people who know something needs to change — they just don’t know where to start. Most organizations aren’t lacking vision. They’re stretched across too many tools, buried in manual processes, or unsure how to move forward with AI. I help them step back, get clear, and implement practical solutions that reduce busy work and create structure.
We offer AI chat and voice agents, automated sales hubs, consulting, subscription tools like Social Studio, and fully custom automation systems. For many clients, we function like a fractional Chief Innovation Officer — guiding AI and automation strategy without them needing to hire someone internally.
What sets us apart is that we lead with clarity first. We assess before we build. We simplify before we scale. And we design systems that actually work.
At the end of the day, we solve real operational pain points, save leaders time, increase visibility, and help organizations grow with confidence instead of chaos.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m always learning and pulling wisdom from people who help me think bigger and work better. Some of the resources that shape how I lead and build are:
Alex Hormozi — business strategy and value creation
Simon Sinek — leadership and purpose
Ali Love — mindset, growth, and intentional living
The Bible — my foundation for values, faith, and decision-making
These voices help me stay grounded, strategic, and focused on both results and character.
