Hidden Gems: Meet Karen Tout-Puissant of Kay Elegant Factory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Tout-Puissant.

Hi Karen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out well the idea started my freshman year of high school I always wanted to be a businesswoman and have my own business I always had different ideas of what business I would have but hair was the #1 idea on my list. At the time I had no money to start only my idea book and some supporting friends that pushed me to always do it. It was only until my senior year of high school that I actually got into it and truly had the funds to start it and I did. It was a lot of hard work and doubts and late nights almost giving up and rebranding but I’m happy with the way my business is going. Even though sometimes I feel like business is slow I continue to go on knowing this was always my dream and something I’m passionate about.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been. Starting the business itself was the hardest part mostly because I kept continuously putting it off because I was scared and unmotivated. Eventually, I did get started but I had no sales something that greatly discouraged me and made me not even want to sell hair anymore. The greatest struggle I’ve had mostly was finding people to actually invest in my line mostly because I know my hair is costly but it’s quality hair and something I know that would benefit them in the long run. I’ve been going back and forth changing prices lowering them putting them up adding new things to the site but it’s always a struggle to find customers.

We’ve been impressed with Kay Elegant Factory, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is my baby it’s something I take pride in mostly because it’s mine and it’s something I worked hard for. I mostly sell hair specifically Virgin Hair. Basically virgin hair is human hair and it comes straight from a vendor and it’s unfiltered it’s beautiful and it’s hair that will last you a long time with proper care. What people should know is that I make it my priority to make sure people get the best products they can from me and I make sure that I always reach out and check up to make sure everything’s going well. When selling hair I feel like it’s an investment within yourself mostly because you’re paying for something to enhance yourself and make yourself feel better.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would yes and no to being a risk taker mostly because I feel like some too mess I’ve given too much and I doubt if I get give anymore but I always remember that with being an entrepreneur you always have to give to receive that’s why I always try to put as much as I can into my business. Sometimes it feels as if my efforts are in vain but I always remind myself that everything is going to work out in the end.
