Hidden Gems: Meet Kate Dramis of Kate Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Dramis.

Hi Kate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My business was a side-hustle at first. I had started picking up some extra freelance copywriting jobs to continue to improve my skills, work with new clients, and bring in some extra money while I was fresh out of school. But then it started to grow… and it grew faster than I ever expected! I was working in marketing strategy for a large corporation when I realized that my business was large enough for me to transition into it full time.

It wasn’t until I became a full-time independent copywriter that I added the coaching arm to my business. It just fit so naturally. I realized that many entrepreneurs were doing what a lot of my clients had done before they found me: they were writing their own copy until they could get to a place where they could afford to outsource it. So I started coaching those clients on how to improve their copy so they could get there faster!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. On paper, it looks smooth. We’ve grown every single year that we’re in business. But actually BEING on the journey is totally different. I think that’s one of the most interesting parts of entrepreneurship: most people don’t see what goes on behind the scenes. There have been so many obstacles.

I often say that while I was building my business, I was rebuilding my life. And I was. I had just gotten out of a long-term relationship and was navigating all that came with that while also trying to figure out how to be a full-time business owner. I had far more questions than answers when I first began, and there were several nights I sat in front of my computer wondering what the heck I had gotten myself into.

And once I finally figured THAT out, I started to realize that there are always peaks and valleys in business. Between navigating the pandemic, to rolling with platform changes that impact our advertising strategies and what we teach, to simply figuring out how to bring in consistent revenue, how to hire a team, how to manage my time and not burn out, etc.

I also didn’t start a business knowing how to run a business. I started a business knowing I wanted to help people, have more flexibility, and create something of my own. That learning curve of “how to run a business” was QUITE the curve for a creative like me. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a support system who answers the phone every time I call with a “what the hell am I doing” type question.

We’ve been impressed with Kate Creative, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a boutique copywriting and consulting agency that helps business owners find, share, and own their voice in the online space. We specialize in conversion copywriting and helping our clients increase their engagement and sales, but we take a messaging-first approach to copy.

I’m a firm believer that you can know all of the copywriting hacks in the world, but if you’re not clear on your core messaging, your stuff still won’t land with your audience.

And I find that for most people, messaging issues aren’t just related to not understanding conversion principles. They’re related to not being clear on your vision or having the confidence to communicate it.

It’s really easy to get lost in the noise online. To try to emulate what other people are doing because you feel like it’s the “right way.” Our goal is to help our clients tap in to THEIR way.

Each person we work with has a reason they started their business. They have a vision and a purpose. We help them get in touch with that again so they can tap into what makes them unique and create their messaging and copy from THAT space.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say I have a fairly high risk tolerance. I definitely think that in the entrepreneurship space, it’s necessary to take risks. That being said, it’s incredibly helpful to have people around you who have a different view on risk. One of my closest friends and advisors is the person who grounds me. I’ll pitch the risk, and she’ll anchor it in logic. Having an alternative perspective is incredibly helpful.
