Hidden Gems: Meet Kemba Howell of Kewell Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemba Howell.

Kemba, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY and spent part of my childhood in NY and part in FL. They were wildly different experiences. In FL I had to learn to adjust, adapt, and find balance in being me while fitting into a new environment. I didn’t know it at that time (obviously), but that time was shaping how I would move through the world in the years to come.

I attended Florida A&M University where I completed 3 internships. Those internships led me to 3 different states and 2 new countries. Having spent the past few years adjusting to new environments made traveling to these places solo a bit easier.

My first job after graduating brought me to GA, where I spent 20+ years in Corporate America before entering the land of entrepreneurship. Having to figure out how to navigate new spaces, at times while in new countries solo, was great preparation for running my own business. Everyday there’s a new learning experience and opportunities to explore new environments. My background is in Finance, but somedays I live in the IT space as I am figuring out how to update my website. Other days it’s Marketing as I decide which tools and spaces to lean in on. And many days, it’s Sales, as I focus on client acquisition strategies.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve faced my share of hurdles along the way. Finding my way in corporate settings, in a male dominated field, had its share of obstacles to overcome. But I had some leaders and colleagues in my corporate life that influenced, encouraged, and supported me along the way. And any entrepreneur will tell you; running your own business has hills, valleys, twists, and U-turns. You fail. You doubt. You learn. You start again. But when you finally understand what you are meant to do, you buckle down and stay committed through the storms.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kewell Consulting?
Kewell (pronounced Cue-ell) Consulting is a finance strategy and advisory firm for small business owners who need more than just clean books for compliance. It’s for companies that also need strategy. I offer Fractional CFO and advisory services, as well as DIY bookkeeping support.

What sets me apart is I believe in relationships above transactions. Guided by that principle, I ask questions and listen closely to understand the needs of the business and leadership team. This helps me look at the big picture without losing sight of the details.

I work with professional services firms (the space where most of my current clients sit); as well as consumer goods, and e-commerce businesses (based on my 20+ years of experience in the CPG space).

If there is one thing I want readers to know, it’s that financial leadership isn’t an asset only large corporations can afford. With the right partner, small and mid-sized businesses can have access to CFO-level insight, which is what Kewell Consulting provides.

What matters most to you?
Integrity and trust. In this field they aren’t just nice-to-haves. They should be the foundation of all financial services businesses. Numbers and reports don’t mean much if they are delivered without integrity. My clients share details about their business that often no one else sees, and they have to know that I’ll handle that information with honesty, care, and their best interest in mind. One of the greatest compliments I’ve received throughout my career is someone telling me “I have more confidence in the numbers now that you are providing them”.
